Charleston has about 100 years of history on Savannah and has always been considered the older, grander sister of the two. There's long been a business rivalry as currently evidenced by the ports expansion nonsense, which IMO, Charleston or any other city, for that matter, can have.

That being said, not long ago, C'town had the better of the night-lives. That is simply a minor detail in the overall health of a city, especially once people grow up and start careers/families. Savannah has made a lot of progress in the past two decades in many respects, but overall, is still in second to Charleston in terms of overall health and vitality.

Does that give it a small town feel? I'm going to say not really.

Precisely. Some people put WAAAYYYY too much stock in that when it comes to their city's overall standing.

Oh good golly, Mutiny. In another thread I state very plainly that I wish Savannah had the business dynamic of Charleston. You even responded to it. I like Charleston, and there are certain things "about" Charleston that i wish Savannah could better emulate. But overall, I find Charleston pretentious and boring. I PREFER living in Savannah, and there are thousands of people just like me. How you infer that I'm "jealous" I'll never know.

PS -- I wouldn't know what people in the Charleston forum think or say about Savannah because I never go there.

I agree, Newsboy. My husband has a conference in Charleston for a few days next week and invited me to go. I turned him down. And despite the fact that I no longer want to live downtown nor in Ardsley Park due to the crime rate, I still think Savannah is much more beautiful than Charleston. I've never understood this supposed "rivalry."

Savannah more beautiful than Charleston? GASP! Well you said it Sunny Isles, not me LOL! Though I do agree. Savannah's tree canopy is unmatched anywhere in the country, dare I say the world? I know plenty of Charlestonians who are insanely jealous of our squares, and others who are just as jealous of our nightlife. So this rivalry thing goes both ways. Some people don't know that Savannah's historic district is BIGGER than Charleston's, and has more authentic buildings as well (not the fault of Charleston; they've been far more unlucky in war, earthquakes and hurricanes than Savannah).

I was out at Isle of Hope the other day, and if Charleston has a neighborhood as breathtakingly gorgeous as that I've never seen it. The Battery in Charleston is lovely and all, but it doesn't hold a candle to our own Forsyth Park -- one of the most stunning urban greenspaces in the world. Ditto Ardsley Park, Chatham Crecent, Gordonston, Victory Drive, the Abercorn Street residential corridor from Victory to 60th with all the pocket parks along the way; again, if Charleston proper has neighborhoods this green and inviting, I have never seen them.

One thing that's really gotten my goat of late is the way Charleston and the state of South Carolina are so aggressively fighting expansion of the Savannah port -- not just the river deepening, but even the construction of NEW CONTAINER DOCKS on the South Carolina side, in Jasper County -- ONE OF THE POOREST COUNTIES IN THEIR STATE! You want to talk about jealously and dirty politics? That's it! In fact, about the only person in SC who cares about this forgotten corner of their state is Republican Gov. Nikki Haley, who got her butt chewed out this week for standing up AGAIN in support of Savannah's port project. She truly has the best interest of her ENTIRE state at heart, Charleston be damned.

It's not really a rivalry; the two cities have their own niches. Charleston is much more business-friendly, has more amenities, is more educated, and has a very solid and reputable performing and visual arts cultural scene. The only rivalry might be as far as tourism is concerned, but outside of that, one is definitely more progressive than the other and it shows. Savannah does get the nod for nightlife, revelry, and even urbanity (being one of the nation's first designed cities). But it seems to lack the vision necessary to be a well-rounded city that sets it on a firm foundation for future growth and prosperity. I hope that eventually changes. I suppose Savannah also suffers from having a city like Atlanta in the state that sucks in all the progress, economically speaking.

I was going to point this out earlier, in regards to Charleston being the "crown jewel" of South Carolina and the focus of state commerce, culture, etc. While Columbia is the capital, and Greenville-Spartanburg the bigger metro, Charleston is what everybody thinks of when they hear "South Carolina." Savannah is having to play catchup after years of neglect by Atlanta.

Really. Just think how many people confuse Charleston with Charlotte -- two completely different states!

I will say this -- after the Friday night I've just witnessed in Savannah, I can't imagine how anybody could favor Charleston. It was rocking!

Savannah has an edge over Charleston in terms of nightlife and the port; other than that, Charleston has it all over Savannah--economically, income levels, higher ed, a more educated populace, shopping, things to do (aquarium, water park, cruise port, etc.), etc.
PER TRIP ADVISOR:

THINGS TO DO
Savannah -- 222
Charleston -- 210

PLACES TO STAY
Savannah -- 107
Charleston -- 53

RESTAURANTS
Charleston -- 553
Savannah -- 447

Except for restaurants, Savannah clearly wins this one hands down. FACT: Savannah attracts nearly 3x the number of annual visitors as Charleston. End of story.
