Hesse Elementary is a wonderful elementary school. The housing around it is affordable. Oglethorpe Charter for middle. Savannah Arts is awesome. Jenkins High is actually a great school for kids that WANT to learn. The opportunities are there in ANY public school for a kid that WANTS to learn. It's just that people want their child in a school with their 'peers'. Understandable.... But, honestly, it IS there in EVERY school in Savannah, if only every child went after it. jmo

I am not from Savannah but I am planning on relocating there, My fiance will be working in Hilton Head, but I don't want to live in South Carolina. I am a teacher and have been teaching for 18 years and I don't want to mess with my retirement. I have three kids..one going to elementary school, one in middle and one in hight school. I want to be as close to the water as I can possibly afford and close enough that my fiance will have a relatively easy commute. I know NOTHING about the Savannah area...I have only been to River Street...LOL

Default Applying for job in Savannah

I'm considering a job in Savannah and am unfamiliar with the area so want opinons about the public middle and high schools there. But first I need to say that employment is not a concern as will be working at Ft. Stewart as a civilian physician assistant and my spouse works from home for her employeer.
We plan to rent a small apartment so can live anywhere that is within reasonable commute distance of Ft Stewart. My wife is somewhat reluctant to leave our Gwinnett County schools unless there are excellent public schools with top-notch athletic programs (both boys play and live football).
Any suggestions for areas with public schools fitting the profile?

Thanks

Looking for some more details on the elementary education in Richmond Hills area. My research resulted in three elementary schools with good test scores, however, I read several comments from parents that the schools focus heavily on getting the children to pass the test and lack in really educating the children! Any other tips or advice? I would really like an elementary school were the parents are involved and several opportunties for activites.

The present plans call for converting the Coastal Middle Sshool into a high school for the island area. The present elementary schools, (Marshpoint, Islands, and May Howard) will be converted into 1-4 and 5-8 or some other similar grouping. This sounds like an ideal plan for children living in the islands area.
