I just checked. The station is in North Charleston. It only takes an hour and a half to get there and costs $24 one way. That is the start of a great idea.

A much better idea:

Link I-77 in Columbia to Savannah via the route US 321 follows. End 77 at the Talmadge. This would address the horrid US 17 issues, give HHI & Beaufort another way to evacuate from hurricanes, and open up interior SC towns to "civilization" such as Bamberg. Plus a straight shot from Savannah to Charlotte would be nice!

Now THAT is a worthwhile idea, but I don't think SC officials would be too keen on giving Columbia direct access to Savannah; that would be way too much competition for the port of Charleston, although it would be a boon for Columbia and towns along the route.

Which is why I feel SC has been dragging her feet on US 17 upgrades: Why provide visitors a nicely paved 4 laned road to take their money to Savannah?
