I am SO confused
I posted a question a couple weeks ago , and got good response, but I am confused, I really am getting mixed thoughts on this whole Savannah thing, as I said earlier we are thinking of moving there in about a year, my husband will be working for Pratt/ Whitney, but I am really scared for our 11 yr old now, all I read about on this web site is the crime and how low the income is, while my husband will be making more than now ( or we wouldnt be moving ) it sounds like I will have a suck job with no money. We where told to look around the Pooler, Richmond Hill, Bloomingdale area, is it the same there? with the crime and such.
We live in Michigan and actully where we live is becoming a suburb of Chicago ( we live an hour away from there) and we have little crime, the schools are not so great as far as education , but other than that the homes are prced about like there , but my pay is MUCH better, I make 13$ as an activities director in a assisted living home.
Now I am really thinking of NOT moving there, just becouse the feed back seems really bad. We are not churchy people and that is one of the things someone said, you need to be churchy,
I grew up in Blairsville Georgia ( north of Atlanta up in the mountains, ) everyone was so friendly there, I was looking forward to moving back to the south, but mabey I better stay here in the north........anyone like to help out on any of this ? I check this web site weekly and just not liking what I have been reading latley .dont worry we plan on coming and checking it out ourselves, but really not looking forward to that at all......

We are not churchy people either, and have not been burnt out yet.
There are no churchy people in Blairsville, Georgia?
When we lived in Gainesville, Georgia (north of Atlanta up near the mountains) there were the same churchy people
And there are plenty of Hedonists, too

As far as crime rate and such, Richmond Hill and Pooler, (and Bloomingdale I think) are all listed individually on City-data.com. The stats there are considerably different than Savannah.
I haven't been to Savannah yet. We're coming the first of November, but I really don't think you can let a few posts scare you. I've read all the same posts and am still really looking forward to our holiday. (And I'm from rural Canada, a town of 350 people. If crime was going to scare anyone, you'd think it'd be me. lol)
You have to remeber that everyone has a different opinion and different experiences. And for some reason quite often it's those with the negative that have the loudest voices.
I hope you do enjoy your visit when you come. From all I've read, I really am interested in the Richmond Hill area.

Still moving there
Thanks for the helpfull insight, I ma moving there not visiting, so I am a little concerned with what i have read. But I just see ALOT of negative feed back, but it is all for Savannah, not the surrounding areas. We are moving no matter what, and will most likly rent for awhile before buying.
As for the Churchy comment I made, there where several posts that mentioned this , and to answer the one question yes I grew up where there people who went to church, but they did not down you if you did not go, THAT is what I was worried about......anyway thank you for you post, I am learning how to use the site to find the info I want and a more positive out look on things there.

Pooler is like the suburbs of Detroit, not a whole lot happens there.
Savannah is like Detroit, it's okay during the day just make sure you watch your back if you go there at night.
As for the churchness I think would be the bible belt in the south and all, I've been there and there were others who weren't all churchly.
Maybe start getting the newspaper for Savannah delivered to your house in Michigan as I'm about to do, to get a better idea on the crime and such.
Personaly I don't think Pooler is much different from Westland or Garden City, but I've only spent 3-4 weeks there over the past 2 years. The weather is nice and people are much nicer there then they are here. When they ask how you are doing it's not a programed greeting. I hate it when I go someplace and someone asks how I'm doing today and I tell them okay/fine/good/bad or whatever and they look at me like I'm stupid. I then ask how their day is and they again look at me like there is something wrong with me.
Another thing you could go do is visit the area before you move. Kayak.com has weekend rates for airlines and such. I don't think you would want to drive down there for the weekend, I did it once and I spent more time in the car driving back and forth then I did there.

If you're the type who gets all insulted and goes on a rant because someone dares to mention church, you won't be happy. If you can just say "thanks, that's very kind" when someone invites you to church, (whether you ever intend to go or not) you'll be fine.

I just read this on today's Savannah Morning News site...
Suspect arrested in beating, robbery at apartment complex
According to Google Maps, Benton Drive is right in Pooler.
I am also relocating to Savannah soon and have been considering living in Pooler. After reading today's headline, I'm not so sure.
Are there good and bad parts of Pooler?

Everywhere I've been in Pooler has been good, but like any city it does have some crime. You don't know the whole story of the apartment robbery, they could of been there for a number of reasons. I hate to say it but I've seen the cops going though my neighborhood a few times, but I would rather see them go though and catch the bad guys then not see them at all.

The article mentions marajuana, prescription drugs with intent to distribute and 3700 bucks. does that give you a clue as to what kind of crime it was?
If you deal in drugs, you are probably going to be robbed or shot sooner or later. Let's hope you don't decide to live where drug dealing is popular.
Every city of any size, and even the little po-dunk towns away from everywhere have crime. Savannah has crime. Pooler has crime. Garden City, Tybee, Richmond Hill, and Rincon all have crime. Even places like New York, Chicago, Detroit, Boston and Los Angeles, have crime.
