I'm looking for information on entry level jobs at the Port. Twenty-five year old living in Bluffton. Strong, personal, former college football star.....looking to start "somewhere".

I'm thinking, with the size of the ever expanding size of The Port of Savannah....there must be opportunties.

Any thoughts about working at the Port?

VERY "clique-ish" at the Port....one of those "have to know someone" to get onboard. But if you're young & strong, go to the ILA Hall & inquire about becoming a longshoreman.

That's what I've always heard , you have to know someone. Fantastic paying job if you can get in.

Hundreds (thousands?) of people work out there so there has to be SOME way to get a job. But yeah, like any highly unionized industry I'm sure it's not easy.

I'm trying to convince my nephew to go for it as I had the same thoughts as the other posters.

At the higher end of the scale some workers are making $50-$60 and hour (I hear). For that you reallly need to know "somebody".

The $50 to 60 figure is probably their OT....

From what I know about Stevedores is you go to the Union hall, do their apprentice program, and from there your hours are all seniority based. Also Longshoreman Union and Stevedores are the same. They also have separate unions depending upon your job. The old traditional job of manual lashing and knots is almost gone and has now progressed to where they are database operators and programmers. The job is highly automated and computer skills are mandatory...

Who are those guys who sit up in those big tall cranes all day long? Who are the ones who lash containers to the cranes? Who drives all those transports and forklifts? Who checks off stuff as it goes in and out to make sure it's legal, not legal, human cargo, dead human cargo, wild animals, invasive insects, weapons of mass destruction? Seriously ... how more people don't killed out there is pretty amazing.

I am a Longshoreman working for ILA in Houston, I originally came to Houston seeking a ordinary seaman position. I have a Merchant Marnier Credential and Twic card. I am experienced in forklift, rigging, lashing and everything necessary to work at the port. I am very physically fit but I am ready to move back the Atlanta. Where would I start to obtain a position with ILA in Savannah?

I would suppose (and I say that from zero knowledge) you would go with your TWIC down to the port and get that info from the horse's mouth. Just saying...and prolly fastest way to get the ball rolling.
