When the Piggly Wiggly at Montgomery Crossroads converted to another store (some sort of "Price Cutter" or some sort of generic-sounding name) they didn't have any of the PW branded merchandise on their shelves. I can see why they would transfer it to other PW stores instead, since the cost of shipping to another PW (where it could be sold at full price) is probably lower than the amount of money lost by selling it at a discount in its current location. I found out later on that this cut-rate supermarket they converted to was actually owned by The Pig (one of their subsidiaries) so I thought it was even odder that they didn't just leave the Piggly Wiggly stuff in there. I forget the name of the replacement store because it only stuck around a few months before they, too left the shopping center, and the store laid empty for a long time before it got sub-divided into the Dollar store and Citi-Trends.

I recall the Kroger being closed down at Statesboro Mall for BI-LO to move in there when I attended GSU. The Kroger (which had been an M&M even earlier) was in such a state of disrepair that BI-LO just tore the whole thing down and rebuilt on the site. It was really shocking to drive by and see the end of the mall basically ripped off like that.

I'm sorry to see them go. They once had a store where Habersham Antiques Mall is. They were one of the last groceries where you could run a line of credit. They also delivered. You could/can order custom cuts of meat that you couldn't easily find elsewhere. This is really the end of an era.

Statesboro "Mall" ... LOL! It's a "mall" in the loosest meaning of the word! Seems to me that Statesboro is now big enough to support a "real" mall, maybe not as big as the one down in Brunswick, but certainly an outdoor-type "lifestyle" center anchored by Belk, JCPenney ... Kohl's. Maybe a Dillard's?

I am not that familiar with the Statesboro Mall. I walked through it just out of curiosity once and laughed and laughed. It's pathetic. I did come across some interesting history on one of those mall geek websites once, that the Statesboro Mall, along with the ones in Dublin, Milledgeville and Waycross (and possibly Tifton) were all developed by the same guy and are pretty much carbon copies of each other.

Also, after giving this some more thought, I think it would be smart for a developer to build a mall-type lifestyle center with department store anchors and such on the southwest side of Statesboro, perhaps where the bypass intersects with 301. That way, it would be convenient for shoppers to come from Metter, Reidsville, Pembroke, Vidalia, Claxton, etc. It's crazy stupid that all of Statesboro's retail is located on one side of town.

Old antiquated zoning ordinances perhaps?

Anyway, I do like your idea of placing a lifestyle center at 301 and 16 though it would really be out there all by itself. At least initially. I could see development following and taking off afterward.

I always wondered why Hobby Lobby had not built a store in Savannah. I'd never even heard of them until visiting Columbus, and I believe there's one in Statesboro...nice place to have around.

Just to update, Dairy Queen is about to re-open next to Victory Square Theater/Firestone/Krispy Kreme. The old Dairy Queen was located where the Zaxby's now stands.
