Default retiring to savannah

My husband and I are considering retiring to Savannah in the near future. Our price range for a home is in the $450,000 to $550,000. We would ideally like to live in the historic downtown area, but we're not sure how realistic that is given our price range. Looking for any information about the historic district with regard to safety, cost of living, and neighborhoods. Also, we're moving from Michigan and we've heard that Savannah is very welcoming to people from the Midwest. Any thoughts would be welcome. Thanks for any help you can give us. We look forward to learning more about the area.

I would suggest that you come and spend about two weeks driving around to get a good look at the other wonderful areas that are outside of the Historic Areas. There are disadvantages there, not the least of which is the easy access to places like groceries stores, drug stores, shopping malls. doctors, and dentists.

The Historic District is small compared to other areas. Many do retire there. For myself, I would find it too confining.

You can rent short term, fully equiped apartments in the HD for a week or two, much cheaper than a hotel. It's a popular way of seeing the area.

You may be able to get a condo in your price range, but that much would also get you a much nicer place somewhere else without the parking and other problems.
