Default Georgetown Area Savannah, Ga Information

Hi, military family moving to Savannah, Ga in Summer 2008.

Does anyone have information about Georgetown? I see it would be a quick drive to Hunter AAF for work.

The reason I ask is I have a child entering 2nd Grade, 1st Grade and Kindergarten respectively. Does anyone have any first hand knowledge or opinions of Georgetown Elem. school?

Because I"m not quite sure I could afford the high priced private schools I've found online so far seeing I have 3 school aged children. Plus I have a child I'd like to get in PreK-3.

But if the education system is that poor in Georgetown I'll have to find a way to afford it I guess. But we just bought a house and renting it out this year in Georgetown and will move in 1 July 2008.

Thanks in advance.

Default Georgetown

Going through threads in here I came accross this post:

On Georgetown: I have lived in Georgetown for close to three years now. The housing ranges from $450 Loft Apartments to $350,000+ homes. Totally mixed as far as race, very diverse. Residents from all over the country as well as locals. The only crime I have heard of is typically in the area of the two main crossroads, Abercorn (SR 204) and King George Blvd. There are a couple of gas stations there, both have been robbed at gunpoint repeatedly in the last 6 months. There is a Dollar General there too that has been robbed twice (once at 5pm!) about a week apart maybe a month or so ago. They actually closed for awhile because of it. Once you get into the subdivisions they are pretty nice, just the typical groups of teenagers that may walk the streets late now that school is out. I totally agree with the person on the work commute. I find it worse coming home, traffic backs up for 2 miles.

On crime: I am originally from a very nice, white collar Chicago suburb, worst crime was someone shoplifting at the mall and they were usually from another city. On the other hand, here my husband and I were chased for 6 blocks in downtown Savannah late one night when walking back to our car (parked off one of the squares). Scared us to death, even though it was a 'nice' area, it was very poorly lit. We still go downtown but usually only during the day, or if at night are very careful where we park. The same as if we were to go downtown Chicago. My husband is from here, he will be the first one to tell you to be careful when you go out.

On schools: My husband would also tell you, do NOT put your kids in public schools here. We came close to having our granddaughter llive with us and the first thing he worried about was the school system. We would either have to move to Effingham County or she would go to private schools.

I would not move here without a job lined up, even if you just take something temporary. I work in Human Resources at a large, prominent area company and I can tell you we see hundreds of resumes for every one person hired. And it is a hospitality-based company.

We both love Savannah because of her character and her history. I love driving through the marshes and the oak-lined streets on my way to work. There is a lot to love here, you just have to take the bad with the good.

And I will repeat what someone else mentioned....do NOT say "this is how we did it......."

Does anyone else have the same experience. Because this post is making me want to sell my house or re-rent it out in July 2008. As is stands now we had planned on moving back into it upon our arrival in July. But I got 3 elementary school aged children and one soon to follow.

Things have changed in Effingham! high taxes and traffic and schools are no better than the better Chatham County schools. Even though some SCCPS are horrid there are better opportunities for top students in Chatham. and I am seeing a trend towards moving into West Chatham from Effingham!!!!!!!!!!
or Effingham has a huge Home Schooling group and new private schools
We chose Chatham over Effingham because of the school system's opportunities

I went to Georgetown Elementary in 3rd grade and part of 4th grade. It is a good school from what I have experience.

Thanks for all your help. I honestly wouldn't plan to move anywhere else but on post at HAAF. If that is the case then my children would be going into private schools. The feeder elementary school for HAAF is Pulaski Elementary and from my research academically not a very good school.

The only two private schools I've found that I can afford is Butler Academy and Providence Christian School. Anyone know anything about the two? The rest like Savannah Christian Prep Academy, Savannah Country Day, Memorial, Calvary Baptist etc etc were all 5000 a year + per child x my 4 children would be 20K !!! YIKES!!! I'm in the military and by no means rich. I want higher education but I can only provide what the good lord pays me lol.

So is crime really that bad in Georgetown now? I found the neighborhood quiet, friendly and charming when we moved out and rented our house in May 2004. Boy things must of really changed because we truly enjoyed our time there

Its still an option. I've heard some say its and ok school but majority have told me at all cost send them to private school.

What I've really heard that if its any consilation if you can't afford private school then Georgetown is one of your best options of elementary schools in Chatham. That and Southside. But then they always ended conversation with I'd still not send them to public school because they only seem good because the rest are so bad

I'd look into Magnet programs but sheesh none of them are close to Georgetown area. I'll be working on HAAF and so will my wife.

Thanks for all your help you guys.

My suggestion is the magnet program. Savannah Arts Academy(not to be confused with Savannah College of Art and Design(SCAD)) is a good high school from what I have been told. All I know is that school quality(at least on a public level) gets bad around high school. Georgetown proved to be a good institution for me as a child(of course this was 1994-1996). It could still be very good. Check it out and see.

Savannah Christian Prep Academy or Savannah Country Day are the best
and do not depend on volunteers to teach
I have not heard of Butler Academy or Providence Christian School. How close are they to Hunter?
Smith is not far from Hunter
Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools
Heard also close to Hunter
Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools

I get a copy of What every child should Know for each grade to help keep the children on track

Georgia Virtual Academy
GVA is a tuition-free public school choice for grades K-8

For Middle school We use Oglethorpe Charter School
Oglethorpe Charter School

and SAA for high school
Savannah Arts Academy, Savannah, GA

Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools
I also have 2 in Bloomingdale Elementary School in the fine and performing arts program.

I only wish I could afford SCPA and Country Day. But thats just not a possibility with 3 elementary age children plus 1 prek-3 child.

Butler is on same street as Savannah Christian Church. Providence is off of Chatham PKWY.

You are so helpful and I appreciate it. Not sure how you putting these links in here but greatly appreciated. Is that Jacob Smith a Magnet Program?
