I think the race had an affect similar to what happened here for the '96 Olympics. There was a lot of advance hype about what turned out to be an "unviewable" event, because it was pretty far offshore. Virtually no one other than sailing teams came to town. Tourists avoided the city fearing crowds. We locals more or less had the whole historic district to ourselves for two weeks. Definitely an interesting experience.

The producers of the WB nighttime soap Savannah (which filmed in the Lilburn area) took the opportunity of the Olympics clogging up the Atlanta area to actually film some stuff in Savannah for once. To that point, the show had all these questionable scenes where you saw mountains in the background and all the cars having Clayton and Fulton County plates, so having some scenes dropped in where you saw actual palm trees and live oaks (and the occasional cobblestone street) was a nice change of pace. The show was still kind of half-baked, but at least there were a few genuine bits of the city on the screen.

Fabulous city! Had a blast... I stayed in Pooler for 100ish and only stayed Friday night. The rest of the people I know (8 of them) stayed on Bay and paid a lot and left today.
