You do realize that H&M is pretty much at the level of the Gap or lower in Europe?

It's like old Navy level quality of clothing ... trendier, but not well made.

I met the owner of Papilotte tonight and had a great conversation. I can't tell you any details, but Ben Carter has a grand vision for that block of Brougton that, if it happens, will be very exciting. Think European shopping arcade.

I also found out that another developer altogether has bought the former Goodwill store and vacant lot across the street (next to Urban Outfitters) and plans new construction of upscale retail and loft apartments completely independent of Ben Carter's project. What this suggest is that Ben Carter's interest and investment in the street is already having a trickle-down affect on other investors and property owners. Good news!

I figured, but it's worth mentioning for the record.

You met the owner of Papillote, good. She is good, runs the business with her family, just like the previous owner who moved to NY. Great soups there.

So, I wonder will Carter preserve our building facades? And if so, I also hope they don't get repainted and renovated "perfectly" like King St, because I like how you can literally see the work of time on all our buildings. Savannah just feels so much more real than Charleston. But I have a feeling that will indeed happen. You don't ever see an Apple Store in a building that doesn't look like it just opened yesterday. Ugh. Too clean and sterile for me. I still hope perhaps the Historic entities here can work to have our buildings retain their "character" I will call it. A little grit!

Just to note, I was hanging out with a bunch of folks from Sweden and Germany this week and they looooved our city so much they committed to coming back even. They were in love with the trees too. So, we must be doing something right, in this city!

Except for the glass facade, the Apple store on King Street doesn't look all that modern to me.

As to your other comments, I think the goal of Ben Carter is to restore all these buildings to their original historic facades if at all possible. Whether you realize it or not, many of the upper floors have been closed off and boarded up for years, with faux stucco or aluminum siding covering up the original architectural elements.

Believe it or not, the Marshall House Hotel was completely hidden behind an ugly blank facade for decades and people had forgotten the treasure that was there until it was restored.

Hopefully all the buildings on Broughton will eventually be restored likewise. But we've got a long way to go.

I'll try to take some pictures.
