I have another take on the casino proposal. We just moved here from central MD where there was a long, bitter battle to bring a casino to an area where there was a large outlet mall, new home development, several hotels catering to business travelers (near BWI airport). The developers promised us it would be built across the road from the mall where families shop and it would not be 24 hrs. Well, they built it adjacent to the parking lot of the mall, and it's open 24 hrs. The crime rate soared, there were shootings and robberies nearly every week, housing values dropped and it is now considered unsafe to go to the mall in the evening. The developers and governor also promised 100% of the taxes generated would go to education but that was not true either. So when people object to a casino in their back yard, it's not always because they want tourist dollars to go to the tourist areas only. Some of us are concerned about the very things that spoiled a wonderful area of MD and don't want that to happen here.

Wandering Import, if you go to the first page and read LPnerd's post, he brings the casino topic up and that was what I was referring to

FYI ... there has been talk about allowing a casino development on Hutchinson Island which, if done right, could complement Savannah's tourism market and boost HOPE revenue. I believe it would pass if put to a statewide vote.

Ok, the OP is not about the joint ports or casinos, it's about a planned business/residential development along US 17 that straddles I-95 near Hardeeville, SC.

Well, you know, not everyone took the Reading Comp 101 class like you did. Some of us were out shooting pool that day. LOL

As to the OP, I drove up US 17 to Hardeeville the other day and the land is being cleared. So yes, I guess this is happening.

I hope this happens. Not only will it be great for the economy of Jasper County, but it will finally bridge the gap between Savannah and Beaufort County and create one large unified metropolitan area of nearly 800,000 people.
