My younger cousin will be moving to Savannah this spring. She is a young girl in her mid 20's and living on her own, so I am always very concerned with her being safe.

We are going to fly into Savannah for a couple days to search for an apartment for her to rent. But we really won't be there long enough to get a good feel for different areas of the city. Can someone help me as to suggest a list of areas to look at and a list of areas to definately stay away from? With safe neighborhood being a priority.

Thank you in advance.

I would do further online research.

'Savannah' includes:

-Historic District-
-Neighborhoods adjacent to historic district--some safer than others
-'The Islands'--East of Savannah--Whitemarsh, Wilmington, Tybee, etc
-The Southside
-West Savannah--Garden City, Port Wentworth, Pooler, etc

Yes, we really need to know where she needs to be. Close to a college? Work? Will she have a car?

The Savannah metropolitan area is over 70 sq miles with a lot to choose from.

No set area that she needs to be in. Just want to look in the safer areas.

Thanks

That still gives you a large area to look at. Since your time will be limited, I suggest that you concentrate on the Wilmington/Whitemarsh Islands area. That would be the most "low crime" area. Next choice would be the area south of Derenne Ave and east of Abercorn Street. There are condos, apartments, and houses, rental and resale. There are pockets of good and bad all over the County. But generally speaking, her best bet would probablly be the Islands area.

Not everywhere is served by a transit system, so if she doesn't have a car, ask about that.

Well, do not let her go to English Oaks on Abercorn. My son's new wife (age 23) moved there before they got married, and she's afraid to go out. They are moving to Walden at Chatham Center and it seems very nice. I know there are at least two other 20-somethings who will be living there who are married to soldiers.

-West Chatham County-- Along Benton Blvd near the Airport and Pooler Parkway.
