Look at Tybee Island near Savannah, not much crime there and Savannah is hardly crime element like the North and northeast, Cleveland, Philly, New York, Detroit or Boston, Baltimore or DC it just doesnt compare

I live in Pooler, Georgia and I like it. We just moved here in August of 2006 and I didn't think I'd like it here when we were here house searching. But it's grown on me. We have 2 children in Pooler elementary. I like it. But we probably won't be here for high school as my husband is military. If you kids are high school age, I would consider Richmond Hill or Effingham County. If you need any more info, feel free to ask.

Gino N. my home is in Mt Pleasant SC, suburb of Charleston. You cant go wrong for low crime, great housing stock, quality of life. Richmond Hills of Savannah is not bad nor is Summerville though it is not on the water.

Beaufort is nice, so is Hilton Head, Kiawah island, Seabrook Island.

Everyone is talking about crime but where does it rank in terms of cities?
Charleston and Savannah that is.

You live in Cleveland?? I live in Philly right now and boy is it dangerous. People talking about crime in charleston, savannah dont know what it means unless theyve been to boston, philly, camden nj, trenton, cleveland, cinci, Detroit, Houston, Dallas, LA, NY and DC--i think they are just whining.

Default Savannah, or Charleston

Hi, I am living in NC now and looking to relocating somewhere.........don't know where yet.
I am single almost 50 and can transfer thru my job to alot of areas so not too concerned about that.
I know some of these areas are not real affordable but I love the old historical charms of both places, I have only me to rely on for income and I can only do about $100,000 or less on a house. Would love to find an old craftsman and fix it up but probably unheard of nowadays..........esp in Savannah, and Charleston areas. Not more than $425 on rent.
I can't go too much farther south because the humidity is enough for me right now in NC, and I am not much of a winter person either.
Also, I love the artsy downtown atmosphere, the parks, the biking, the walking of thoese areas.
So, is there anything/anywhere that I could enjoy the same amenities of these areas and still be able to afford it living there?

Thanks!!!

Look in the fringe areas of the historic district and Ardsley Park and Pierpoint and Victorian District areas where Gentrification is in process. There are still opportunities. Find several people working together block by block to expand the area

There are lots of homes available in the savannah area that are "fixer uppers". It is definitely beautiful. I think you might like the islands as well. If you need any help feel free to contact me. I'll answer as many questions as I can and find answers for ones I can't.

I read your initial post and that's how I feel about living in Philadelphia,so you're never alone.

Stuck in Pa.....I'm originally from a town south of Pittsburgh. It wasn't too bad there. However, Pittsburgh is so ugly and scary. I hate all the bars on every building and home. It's terrible that people have to live that way.

My bestfriend just moved to Summerville. She absolutely loves it. I've been down there to visit her once and it truely is a nice place. Very easy to drive to Charleston from Summerville. I am also looking to relocate to the Savannah area as I will be graduating from college in May with a B.S. in Elementary Education. I have heard Richmond Hill is one of the fastest growing communities in the country and that is like a gold mine for teachers, so I will be looking into RH rather extensively. Good luck with your relocation!
Give Summerville about ten years and you'll see the crime shoot up. I was in Summerville and North Charleston recently and I can already see the "element" of inner city Charleston already beginning to creep out to the burbs. Richmond Hill is truly a wonderful place to live.

I was born and mostly raised in Savannah and in my opinion, Savannah is a nice place to visit. It is beautiful in parts but between the crime and the bugs it isn't a desirable place to live and raise children. I've left the state altogether and have NO desire to return except to visit family. My entire family have moved out of Savannah and into Effingham county to get away from the crime. My parents moved to Bloomingdale thinking they would be away from the crime, but it's getting bad there too. Their neighbors were just robbed, they've been robbed and Mom say's all the kids in the neightborhood are thugs.
