Should be a nice addition for the folks in South Effingham and West Chatham.

Walking trails, a shooting range and sanctuaries for bees, birds and butterflies are among the possibilities for a planned 1,400-acre park in South Effingham County.

An anonymous donor deeded the property to a land trust, and Southeastern Trust for Parks and Land acquired the property in December 2013. The park will be on the southern boundary of Effingham County, between Ga. 17 and Ga. 30, with about 150 acres in Chatham County.

Bill Jones, executive director of the trust, estimated about 350 acres of the property is wetlands. The land’s value for tax purposes is $1.05 million.

Community leaders will meet Feb. 20 to discuss possible uses for the property.

The land will be protected, but “low-impact, nature-based recreation opportunities” will be allowed, including hiking, biking and nature observation along designated trails and existing unpaved roads.

Jones said the property has an extensive system of trails and dirt roads.

The land provides an area near suburban and urban human populations for wild land education, hiking and nature observation, he said, and the land will be an important habitat for wildlife and plants.

No, it is a smaller parcel by about 200 acres and will be taken off the county tax digest same as IDA properties.
