Tell me more about "The Islands"
We (DH and 1 year old son) will soon be moving to the Savannah area. We love boating, fishing, and currently live within a 10 minute walk to a beach, so we are drawn to the islands outside Savannah. Tell me, though, is it going to be a place to meet other young families? OR will it be mostly retirement? Is one island more family oriented than another? We don't have to have both (beach and boating) but we would sure love to have one or the other. Which islands have more affordable homes and which ones are more expensive?
Really, any info about the islands is very helpful! We will be there to look around in a couple of weeks, so any direction is much appreciated!
Thanks!!

There several island communities. a few have public or marina docks. Homes with private access to the water are very expessive. None, as far as I know have beaches.
The Wilmington and Whitmarsh Islands are the most family oriented. The Islands YMCA is very active in the family lives of the Islanders. There are three public elementary, and one large middle school there. One private school, numerous churches, a large Walmart, several large super markets and pharmacies. These two would probably have the more afforable homes. Skidaway Island, Dutch Island, and Wylly Island are the most upscale. Isle of Hope goes from high to low.
You really have to see for yourself. There are a lot of nice rental condos and apartments on Whitmarsh.

I forgot Tybee Island. That's the island with the beach, ocean, fishing, boating and everything. 20 mile drive into town. Very small with thousands of extra people during the summer. It would be a great place to live if you could barricade the one road onto the island and not let in the visitors. Quiet and peaceful, it isn't!

Thank you! That is exactly the type of info I was hoping for! Tybee sounds most like what we live near now (and yep, if only ya could limit the tourists!!), but I am kinda guessing that it won't have a lot in the way of young families??? Also, is Tybee a pain to get to and from?
It looks like we may end up visiting later this week! Oh so many ducks to get in a row before our visit!!!!! Thanks again for the help! This board has been a lifesaver!

I found Tybee to be quiet... after 9pm lol The traffic is not bad, just a bunch of rubber neckers slowing things down. Compared to other beach destinations it is a DREAM. Tybee is a great family vacation spot but I am not sure it would provide enough activities for year round living unless you guys are TOTAL beach bums and don't require alot of fast food haha. I would LOVE it but that's my thing and my child is only 3 so we could spend HOURS just playing on the beach. Now when he gets older that will be another story. As we go only to Tybee that's about all I can help you with lol but it sounds like Padgett has got the rest covered.
Let us know how your search goes

I live in Wilmington Island. I love it here.
I have a friend who lived in Tybee and told me that the people who live there are a little bit 'different'.
