I am going to be moving to Savannah soon from Jacksonville Fl, where I have lived for the last 20 years. My wife and I would like to live in an area where could walk to reataurants and stumble home from bars. Can that be done in the downtown at a reasonable price, 200K-250K?

Also, if the downtown doesn't work does anybody know of a neighborhood or area that has houses that still have tree cover. From what I see all the new housing developments have been clear cut and I don't want to live in a cookie cutter neighborhood.

Oh, I will be working out of the port of Savannah and will have an officer in Garden City.

Downtown is about the highest priced area in the county. There are many condos and lofts on the market in downtown right now with a bunch more about to be added. I have seen some 1 BR lofts on the market in downtown such as Broughton St. in your price range. I think you will be able to find a 1 BR 1 BA condo or loft in your price range that will put you in the heart of it all.

As far as other neighborhoods with tree cover:
Ardsley Park
Baldwin Park
Starland District
Kensington Park
Thunderbolt
Gordonston

If your office is going to be in the Garden City area, your best bet would be Garden City. There are some nice homes there, but no bars. Terrible traffic. Not a good walking around town.

It's going to be difficult to find good housing within walking distance of good restaurants. Add decent bars to that, and the Downtown Historic District is your only choice. The housing problem has dropped rental property prices waaaaay down. You might luck up on exactly what you want.

Savannah is a driving town. Anywhere outside of the Historic District, you want to get anywhere......you drive. It's just the way it developed.
