With all of the recent investments being made in the area, I hope the city can find a buyer who will build something impressive for this site. I would hate to see something suburban go there..

The city, for its part, is again trying to sell the vacant lot on Hall Street and MLK after the mayor and aldermen approved the sale of the property to a development group one year ago.

A request for proposals was issued by the city on April 24 to find a new buyer after the development group failed to close on the $950,000 purchase with the city, according to city officials.

Alderman Van Johnson said the city had specific criteria for the site and the property was supposed to be developed in a timely manner.

“I understand they weren’t able to pull it off,” Johnson said.

The city had purchased the property in 2007 for $985,000 with the intention of building a cultural arts center there, but issues such as parking limitations led to a new site being selected.
