Moving to Georgia - Need Advice on Neighborhoods
My husband and I are looking to move to Georgia and are looking for a well establish neighborhood in which the majority of residence are African American. Low crime rate area with easy access to hospitals, parks and stores. A community in which the residence take pride in their homes and culture. A family community. This would be a retirement home and our primary residence. We will be relocating from California. Our ages are 57 and 63. Our budget is between 250K - 400K.

i hate to break it to you, but in savannah, there is no such this as a well established black community with low crime rates. that just doesnt exist. and to be completely honest with you, we dont need anymore racial division than we already have so maybe you should broaden your horizons and live in a "white neighborhood". and if you dont like white people, do the wonderful city of savannah a favor and dont move here! thanks!

Geez, the OP was just being honest and to the point. You don't need to come down on her. As a black person, I see nothing wrong in her asking where her family can find a well established middle class neighborhood in Savannah where the majority are African American....just like I would have no problem with white posters coming on and asking where they can live in a area where the majority are white. Some people are just more comfortable around their own keen. Nothing wrong with it...as long as you don't discriminate in terms of actions by disadvantaging others because you think YOU'RE better because of their race.
There's nothing discriminatory about wanting to live with people who look more like you---white or black. Jeez, people are so sensitive.

I agree. There is nothing wrong with wanting to live in a nice neighborhood with people who look like you. I'm so sorry this person received such a nasty response to a simple question. I'm also thinking about moving to Georgia. Thought this website might be helpful. If this is how people respond, forget it! I am white and your statement embarrasses me.

Georgiagirl08 and deannaparrish exemplify the racial problems that exist in Savannah. Fortunately, not everyone here is so closed minded as those 2.
There are very nice neighborhoods in Savannah, that I'm sure you would enjoy, but it's true, there are no upscale areas that I can think of which are mostly black. There are, however, several nice neighborhoods that are more mixed, and there is more and more integration every year. You might want to check out areas of Pooler, but it is mainly younger families out there.
If you're not set on Savannah, you would probably have better luck finding what you're looking for in Atlanta.

the new areas of Port Wentworth are very diverse. With both a mix of Retirees and families.

First off I didn't see anything wrong with her question. And for the most part I live in Florida but looking to relocate from here to Georgia within the next year or so, I just don't find that living here I would want to buy a home and invest in Florida. I work within the insurance field and it is horrible! Also for the comment of not finding a black community with less crime that's not true in Jacksonville Florida there are couple of areas communities where the crime rate is pretty low compared to any other community in a non-black area. These areas range from homes and income brackets over 100k a year and homes ranging from 150k to 350k so as black people we can live amongst each other without crime being the number one downfall for our people. Crime is wherever the low income areas are and that is NOT a race issue but a poverty issue.

There is an area called Sylvan Terrace that might suit your purpose. It's in a lovely, convenient area. Another would be Nottingham Woods. Both are mixed, but my impression from just driving by, is that they are mostly AA.
The Savannah State University is our historic black college and if you could find out where the professors live, that might work well too. It's at Thunderbolt, Ga. Thunderbolt is a small town that is adjacent to Savannah.
