Hi there,

I visited Savannah for the first time a few months ago and enjoyed the city tremendously. I was wondering though where working families live. I currently live in Durham, NC and was wondering if savannah had the kind of suburban sprawl we do here in the triangle.

Thanks

You visited our Landmark Urban Historic District. It's nice, but you're right, not the home for most of the city's working middle class and lower income folks.

There are numerous locations - basically everywhere that isn't the historic district. So, islands, midtown, south side, east side, west side, and all the environs.

The short answer is yes, though Savannah's suburbs don't "sprawl" nearly as much as many sunbelt cities, we still have plenty of cookie cutter subdivisions and strip malls that visitors to downtown just never see. I'm always amused when tourists act surprised to learn that Savannah has shopping malls.
