I too, would prefer to buy plants from a private nursery, but I have been very frustrated around here trying to find any good ones. I find that they do a poor job of marking their plants with either the characteristics of the plant, or the prices. I was so spoiled in Ohio with great nurseries nearby.
I go to The Secret Garden on Ogeechee once in awhile, but unless you drag around one of their few employees with you, good luck, because nothing is marked.
I recommend you take a day and go up to Bluffton area. There is a small nursery called Rose Due, run by a nice couple who are present and know about their plants. There are several other nurseries up there, whose names I don't remember, but just google the area and make yourself a garden route to check them out.

This place looks interesting.

Thanks GA. You actually gave me an idea of someone to use when you mentioned Bluffton as my brother lives there and he has dealt with someone that I understand is great.

Herb Creek in Sandfly and on Victory Drive is pretty nice.
