Correct me if I'm wrong (as I don't have the figures in front of me), but isn't Savannah's historical high at 146K?

According to Wikipedia it was 149,245 in 1960.

HERE'S A QUESTION: At this growth rate, how long until Savannah surpasses 200,000 and reclaims its rightful place as No. 2 in the state? With all the undeveloped land in West Chatham that lies within the city limit and is zoned for residential PUD ... this is altogether possible.

Impossible, NB. The only way to markedly increase Savannah's population is through annexation or consolidation. Chatham County, like Fulton and the urban counties in S.C., has many independent communities plus an entrenched unincorporated county government. There's a positive side to that: these counties are growing in population at a healthy clip, whereas consolidated and integrated Macon-Bibb, Columbus-Muscogee and Augusta-Richmond are flat in population growth (or going down in population).

The erratic western patchwork of City of Savannah land tracts you cite will never host significant thriving, populated areas in the near future -- at least areas that could affect the population growth of Savannah in any great way. Savannah could well catch Macon by the 2020 Census (Macon-Bibb is still losing population every year), but it will remain the fourth- or fifth-largest city in the state without a major annexation bill. And historically, legislators in Pooler and Chatham County never allow these things to proceed to county-wide referendum. Let's look on the bright side: Chatham County and all of metro Savannah, despite the increasing rate of homicides in East Savannah, available sand gnats, future Aedis aegypti Zika mosquitoes, and perhaps the most depressing suburbs in the South, continue to grow faster than any other urban area in Georgia in terms of percentage rate. Faster even than Atlanta since 2010. Why? Because Savannah itself has a distinct culture, a great downtown, four universities, and it's spectacular to look at. City population is irrelevant -- just a "crowing mechanism" for some. But ask yourself: Do Atlantans really care if they're *officially* only the 40th largest municipality in the US? Do Charlestonians give a hoot if their fair city has only 132,000 residents within the city limits? No.

How many though in the county? We have over 300K here. That's part of why we are leaving here this summer. Way too many people and the infrastructure can't handle it.

Chatham County has nearly 300k people. Only 100k or so are in unincorporated Chatham County. The rest are under jurisdiction of Savannah and the surrounding cities of Pooler, Garden City, Tybee Island, Thunderbolt, Bloomingdale, and Port Wentworth.

Metro Savannah is pushing 400k and the CSA is more than 500k. You may want to check out these numbers because what you're trying to leave sounds very similar.
