Default Moving to Savannah Georgia

Hi my name is Maureen, I am curious about Savannah Georgia beings that my boyfriend is in the Coast Guard and he will be working for a Coast Guard Air station and a possible place is Savannah. I will be moving with him so we have been researching some areas he could possible be stationed. We are in our mid twenties and love the outdoors and enjoy hiking, biking, running and basically anything outdoors. We are very laid back people originally from South New Jersey. He is currently stationed in Alaska but will be leaving sometime in the summer to a new station, possibly Savannah. I currently work as a Speech Pathologist in a private school setting but I am looking to eventually get a job in a hospital. So if anyone has any information about living in Savannah and cost of houses and job oppertunities please let me know, we would greatly appreciate it!
Thank you so much!
Maureen

Hi. I dont have any info for you right now, but my husband is also in the CG and we are actually getting ready to move there in 2 weeks. I am going down there this weekend to look around for places, so when I get back I will try to give you what information I have.

Well, moving from Alaska to Savannah will be quite a change....for one thing, it's about 70 degrees and sunny today! There are a lot of outdoor activities here in Savannah, but most involve the water. Boating/kayaking are big, as are beach days. There is some surfing and windsurfing too. There are plenty of joggers around town, but hiking / biking is somewhat limited, although I hear there is a pretty decent biking trail at Tom Triplett park (off of 80 in Pooler), and they have a nice disc golf course too. There's also a trail that follows the canal which is just about the only good hiking trail I've found so far.

The one thing I've noticed about Savannah is that it is very flat. There is some great scenery with the marshes, but one thing I miss is hiking through the mountains. Another drawback to consider (especially if your coming from Alaska) is that it gets really hot and humid in the summer. Probably just a little bit worse than what you saw in Jersey, but definitely enough for you to want to stay indoors, or in the water.

If you do decide on Savannah, I would highly recommend checking out the islands (Whitmarsh/Wilmington). It's a good spot for young couples, like yourselves and people out there seem to be more into the outdoors. Plus, I heard the YMCA on the islands has a rock climbing wall.

I have to say the above comment is very on point when it comes to outdoor activities, I have been living here for 5yrs and I have to say that other than running and water sports(if you like salt water) there isn't too much else to do. I don't know about the YMCA but Hunter Army Airfield just built a new gym with a rock climbing wall and tons of other new goodies Another good place to live is in Georgetown, you can get just about any where in 15-30min. I hope this helps

Hey there. I just got back from there last weekend. It is beautiful. Didnt see too many "bad" parts of town. In fact, my dad tried to find those areas so my husband and I would know. We found 2 bad parts. I cant tell you right off hand where they were bc I dont know my way around yet. We will be moving there in 2 weeks, so If there is anything you would like to know just let me know and I will see what I can find out for you. Also, if you get stationed there, if you want me to go look at the places and take pictures I will. Let me know if you have any specific questions.
