I think the ports next rail project should be a direct link rail parallel to I-16 to Macon then Atlanta and maybe a branch to Columbus. Then we could just throw a commuter train on in the morning and evening in between the freight trains. A ton less truck traffic on 16 and we get an express commuter rail!!

This would be a great idea, especially to drive more tourists from Atlanta and other parts of Georgia. Add a more local connection between the airport and downtown and you’ve got gold.

Those would be easy additions, we could pay for them with SPLOST money once the main line is funded. It would only be a few miles. Run up 95 to the airport and if the line went into Carolina to connect the Jasper Port terminal, it's just a short stretch to the area around the new arena site to help spur development there as well. From there, CAT trolley line through out downtown and out to Eastern Wharf.

At their annual state of the port address, GPA chairman unveiled a new 10-year, $2.5 billion expansion plan. This will be HUGE not only for Georgia, but for the eastern half of the U.S. as well.

Quote:
"We’re preparing to redefine the Port of Savannah as not only simply the load center for the southeastern U.S. but as the port of choice for major inland markets east of the Mississippi River,” Lynch said.

Lynch also expressed thanks for the leadership provided by state and local economic development authorities for helping to land 29 port-related projects in the fiscal year 2018, bringing more than $1 billion in investment and 4,741 jobs to Georgia.

Furniture manufacturer and distributor Sofamania has leased 322,500 square feet in Savannah.

The company will occupy more than half of the 600,000-square-foot logistics building 175 Portside Court owned by Duke Realty Corp. The facility is located at the intersection of Interstate 95 and Georgia 21, minutes from the Port of Savannah and within easy access of I-16 to Atlanta.

“Duke Realty was able to provide us with well-located warehouse space within minutes of the port and with superior access to several major interstates,” said Abraham Amouyal, CEO with Sofamania. “At 175 Portside, Sofamania is in an excellent position to receive incoming shipments and distribute items to our customers throughout the United States.”

Another great month for our ports...
Quote:
Containerized cargo at the Port of Savannah was up 12 percent in September compared to the same month a year ago, while roll-on/roll-off trade at the Port of Brunswick soared by 37.6 percent.

"The impressive volumes ... are related to our customers building inventory for the peak-buying season," said Griff Lynch, the GPA's executive director. "We anticipate year-on-year growth to continue as we're trending toward a strong fourth quarter."

More warehouse space on tap for Port Wentworth...
Quote:
The property is bordered by Jimmy DeLoach Parkway to the west and the Norfolk Southern railroad tracks to the east. The property is east of the Dynacraft site off Ga. 21 that is currently under construction. A groundbreaking was held for Dynacraft, a supplier of bicycles, electric and battery powered ride-ons in September as Phase I of the three-phase project.

The zoning was changed from EDZ, Economic Development Zone, to P-I-1, Planned Industrial. The permitted uses in the EDZ are economic development projects of the Georgia Department of Economic Development and the Savannah Economic Development Authority. Industrial allows for warehousing and distribution centers.

The Savannah industrial market is now the #1 growth market in the U.S.! The vacancy rate is 0.69, that is almost unheard of. It's crazy to think that in 2001, there was only 15 million sf of space in the metro and now there is 60 million with more planned. The port has been a blessing for Savannah.
Quote:
In a report released this week, Colliers International’s Savannah office puts the local industrial vacancy rate at a scant 0.69 percent for the third quarter, with a record-breaking 9.2 million square feet currently under construction.

“While that certainly seems like a lot of new construction, the port’s success, coupled with an industrial vacancy rate of less than 1 percent, continues to drive the need for more space,” said Colliers Savannah associate Hilary Shipley.

“In fact, nearly half of that square footage is build-to-suit, leaving less than 5 million still available.”

At this point why does the GPA even do these press releases about new records being broken. The port breaks a new record every month....
Quote:
Comparing the 2018 fiscal year-to-date (July-Oct.) with the same period last year, container trade in Savannah increased 8 percent, for a total of 1.53 million TEUs handled. That is 113,000 TEUs more than in 2017.

The Port of Savannah’s Ocean Terminal increased trade in breakbulk cargo in October. Growth of 25.8 percent brought the total to 126,165 tons of commodities ranging from autos and machinery, to rubber, steel and lumber. Overall containerized volumes in October grew by 4,000 TEUs, or 1 percent, compared to the same month last year, and by 13.6 percent (49,600 TEUs) compared to September 2018.
