I stumbled upon this article the other day and wanted to share it with you all, as it underscores Savannah's unique and admirable place in Southern history and culture. One of the many things I love about Savannah is that it never really walked in lockstep with other cities in the South.
Small Fortunes Made Among Black Elites - Savannah Podcast
Of particular interest to me is the story of Anthony Odingsell, a planter and slaveholder that was himself black. He inherited Wassaw Island and instead of cultivating it, retained it as a hunting preserve. As a result, Wassaw has always remained in a pristine condition with virtually no human incursion. It is the best example of what a sea island looks like in its' primeval state; a wonderful legacy indeed.
