It's about time a hospital was proposed for the west side. With this project, the proposed mixed-use project and the ever increasing build-out of the Savannah Quarters development, the I-16/Pooler Pkwy interchange area is becoming the new hot spot for Pooler. I seriously wish GDOT would go ahead and widen I-16 to Pooler Pkwy now.

Phase one of a $62 million Pooler campus is scheduled to open in early 2019 on an 18-acre parcel on Pooler Parkway near the intersection with Interstate 16. That’s the first step in a 10-year build-out to create a 170,000-square-foot, multi-story, technologically advanced medical facility, said Paul P. Hinchey, president/CEO.

“St. Joseph’s/Candler is a true regional health system, and it is important that we place our resources where are patients are,” Hinchey said. “We recognize that they are busy and we didn’t want to let a lack of access stop them from taking care of their health care needs.

“This location is a perfect spot not only for the people of Pooler, but those in Statesboro, Richmond Hill, Hardeeville and farther out who need to come to get crucial medical services, but don’t want to drive into Savannah.”

Is this going near the assisted care living facility at Quacco and Pooler Pkwy?

I saw in a WTOC that it would be north of 16 near Lowes.

It is going right next to Lowe's. The assisted living is about 1.5 miles further down by the fire station. There is space by the assisted living center for a similar project or hospital.

Memorial Health bought 37 acres at this same intersection of 16 and Pooler Pkwy 15 years ago to eventually build a West Chatham Hospital. In fact, the street that connects Pooler Parkway to the dead-end portion of Quaco Road is called MEMORIAL BOULEVARD! Not sure if they still own that land, but with their huge financial and management challenges I think it's safe to say a new hospital is no longer in Memorial's plans. SJO is expanding like crazy but will still need a CON from the Department of Community Health to make this a full-service hospital.

They still own the land along Memorial Blvd. although it is a terrible place for a hospital. It isn't up by the Parkway, it is actually at the other end near Quacco and the neighborhoods. I would imagine it goes up for sale before long. The first phase won't have an emergency room but I imagine either of the next two could have one if they choose. We really need an emergency room even if it is just a small one.

Interesting about the location of that Memorial property. Does it have frontage on I-16? Wonder if they planned to have a dedicated exit like they do off Truman Parkway?

St Joe's just expanded their ER so I don't see them getting approval to expand again anytime soon. But they could open an enhanced immediate care facility in Pooler for non-life threatening cases that clog up the real ER. Broken bones, sick kids, etc. The hospital ER in my hometown was so overwhelmed by non-emergencies that's what they ended up doing.

No matter what, SJC really has their act together and will do the right thing I'm sure. They are far and away the biggest and best health care system between Jacksonville and Charleston and north to Augusta. There's a reason people in Brunswick, Vidalia, Statesboro, and Hilton Head all come to Savannah for specialists and such. I don't know how some of these little rural hospitals in Effingham and Hardeeville function.
