I have a question since we are coming for a visit to consider moving there next yr. is crime really as bad as this post makes it appear to be????? I know all cities have crime, my current one as well, but I’m left to wonder how this would touch someone newer to the community? If you’re responsible about your safety, and aren’t part of illegal activity to begin with, is this something I should be concerned about?

You should be no more or less concerned about violent crime in Savannah than where you live now, or anywhere else for that matter. Random acts of violent crime are EXTREMELY rare here and everywhere else. Most of the homicides that occur in Savannah are on streets or in neighborhoods I’ve never heard of or know nothing about ... other than on the news. In short, innocent people are not being gunned down on the streets, though occasionally there will be tragic cases of being in the wrong place at the wrong time — like last July 4 when a well-respected local guy was struck and killled by gangbangers fleeing from police.

Seems like violent crime is down a good bit this year. If I’m correct, we’re now at 10 murders halfway through the year, which is way below what we’ve seen in years past. Most of the murders are not random. It’s gang members and drug dealers killing each other. A few years ago there was more of a problem with folks being robbed at gunpoint randomly but that seems to have gone way down.

Violent crime here per capita is far higher than most cities this size in terms of national average. Is it localized? Yes. However there are sometimes shootings in City Market and right next to it, is one of the most violent housing projects in the city, Yamacraw Village, literally across the street. Sugarcoating things is what's gotten Savannah to be less great than it could be. The crime and litter here is still above average. Especially property crime. Murders are down this year, yes. This is great news. Let's see how summer goes before getting ahead of ourselves.

Crime is definitely high. Yet we have a sheriff who wants to get people out of jail as quickly as possible and county commissioners who are more interested in reducing the jail population than keeping bad folks locked up.

Thank you for the replies. Is it “safer” in areas 20-45 minutes further out from savannah, such as Pooler, Rincon, Guyton, Bloomingdale?

Is it safer in the suburbs than in the urban downtown area? Yes. Is that true of any MSA in the country (world)? Pretty much.
