Port Wentworth is a long, congested, and ugly drive from downtown Savannah. You'll be sure to see the worst parts of town.
I'd stay out on Mall Blvd or Abercorn St. if you are going on vacation. If your trip is business related, if you work for the paper mill or the ports, then Port Wentworth is the place. The motels at the airport are some of the least expensive around but I'm not sure of their quality. Do a motel search and just stay in one of the major places out on Abercorn to be sure. It's on the generic southside part of town but you'll end up someplace decent. There are a lot of nice hotels downtown but they cost more.

I didn't like the days inn at mall blvd. I haven't seen the one in Pt. Wentworth. I did like the red roof inn in Pooler. It was more expensive but worth it to me.

You know, I'm just realizing that the motels you mentioned in Port Wentworth are probably way out on the interstate. Welcome to an even more generic adventure, highway driving. It's even longer that way and unacceptably far by local standards. Stay in town where you can at least shop, see the sights, and eat out at someplace other than a chain, just like you'd find at home.

Okay, in the future I am going to see who I'm responding to before I write. Jade, if you and your husband are looking for a place to live and work, by all means stay on Abercorn where you will be centrally located. If I moved back to Savannah, I'd look for a home somewhere between the 40's streets and Stephenson Ave on the north and south and Waters and Abercorn on the east and west. This is the middle of town and is relatively safe and affordable.
The southside is a result of urban sprawl. Some parts of the southside are going downhill rapidly because the poorest people are being priced out of the inner city and "white flight" neighborhoods are moving farther and farther to the south and west in Chatham County.
If you look in the area I've suggested you will likely find a nice mix of people, mostly white, but people who will likely accept you for who you are, especially if you say hello when you see them.

All the Motels at I-95 exit 109 (Port Wentworth/ Rincon) are less than 5 years old and 10 miles from River Street 5:30 to 6:30 PM and 7-8 AM traffic is bad, other times its ok. If you want cheap look to Hardeeville,SC
Exit 5. 15 miles to downtown and no traffic- through the Wildlife Refuge
