Default Moving to Savannah/please help

I will be moving to Savannah this summer. I want to live in the downtown area and have found a possible place to live on Henry Street. Can anyone provide me with information on this area. I am specifically looking for information on how safe this area/street is.

You might find some FYI here>>>

The locals will probably need to know which part of Henry St and/or how close to Forsyth Park which seems to be a transitional area.

This is not what you would call a good area. Most of it is too, too close to areas that have a lot of problems. It's also not what you would think of as "downtown." It is not what you would think of as convenient to anything. It is also a busy one way street with little parking available.

Are you looking for an area that is close to the usual type of shopping....groceries, malls, clothes, drug stores, service stations, etc? If so, then the Midtown or Southside areas might suit you better. "Downtown" in Savannah is the Historic Distric, the financial district, bars, hotels, specialty shops and tourists.

Thank you both for your replies. The particular property I was looking at is around 500 E. Henry. Padgett2 you pretty much confirmed what I was already thinking about crime level in that area.

Here is a little more info which might allow you to help me even further. Myself and 3 co-workers/buddies will be returning from Iraq and are looking for a 4 bedroom house/apartment in the downtown area. We'd like to be within a 1-2 mile distance from the bars, restaurants and parks. Not sure if there is a well known line that splits high crime from normal crime in the downtown area. Again, I appreciate your help.

check out the address on this site.

Chatham County

The even numbers are on the north side of the street and the odd numbers are on the south. put in the number you are interested in and look at the pictures. Also, check out several numbers in the nearby area. Those without pictures are usually those that have been condemmed or torn down. Some are tied up in sales, etc. But looking at those in the 500 block of East Henry, most of the houses look pretty bad. A couple of possibles, but the neighborhood generally leaves much to be desired.

There are big houses in the Victorian Section that would be like you want. If you find another one that you think you might be interested in, look it up.

Good luck!

East Henry is better than west Henry. I actually know the block you're talking about, the old Carnegie Library is in that block. Recently a friend and I walked down the lane on the north side of the street down to the little park. It's much better than I expected.

I would personally consider living there if I had a secure parking space and maybe a dog. It is an area that saw a fair amount of renovation, though it is still incomplete. There are college students, a number of long-time residents, as well as a mix of other people living there.

There are quite a few young military men living south of Forsyth Park. I think they are also enjoying what downtown has to offer.

If you need any additional feedback, send me a pm and I'll do what I can to connect you with the other Iraq vets I know of.

I agree with Ellie. My husband is in Iraq right now and I know there are a few that live downtown and such. Just make sure you check it out for yourself!
