Hello,

We're visiting family who live on Wilmington Island.

Can you recommend a hotel stay -- I'd like to find a hotel in midtown, but I'm up for a hotel in the Historic District if it's not top dollar.

On our last visit we stayed in the old Oglethorpe Inn midtown and it was truly not nice. Didn't feel clean, didn't seem like it was even updated in 1975.

I'm not a snob. I just want clean w/ possibly a pool for the kids.

A million thank yous,

Alley

I think you are confused.

There's no Wilmington Island in Connecticut. There is a Wilmington Connecticut but it's not an island.

There is a Wilmington Island Ct. in South Carolina. There's also a Wilmington Island in Georgia.

There was an Oglethorpe Inn and Suits in Georgia, but it's closed.

There's also an Oglethorpe Inn and Suites in Huntington, West Virginia.

There is no Oglethorpe Inn in Wilmington, CT

You're posting in the Connecticut subforum.

So, this is proof that I'm really tired. I don't know how I got to the CT forum, I clicked on Georgia and then Savannah.

Thank you for letting me be stupid.

Alley p.s. We have a great aunt who lives near Yale, I hear CT is gorgeous!!

Connecticut IS gorgeous. And Yale area in New Haven is amazing. Lots of mixed archetecture and some nifty hotels.

For the Historic District of Savannah -

The Hyatt Regency is listed at $118/night, and is a 4-star hotel. In other more cosmopolitan cities, that'd be more like $150+ per night so that's probably within your budget for the area.

The Marshall House is $116/night - another 4-star hotel.

The River Street Inn is $100/night. It's a 3-star hotel but has a LOT of 4 and 5 star ratings from Google.

I looked on Yelp and trip advisor to choose our riverfront Savannah hotel.
Didn't have a pool though. Didn't need one.

If you do choose the River Street Inn, I bet you'll want an upper floor river view room.
My favorite was the upper floor corner room on the northeast side, but I don't know what they calling those rooms these days.

Her kids would love seeing the container ships go down the river.

I sometimes wonder why hotels are still doing well compared to Airbnb. After my first Airbnb many years ago I immediatley thought...wow, how are hotels even in business still. airbnb's are a quarter or less the price, way more space; sometimes a whole house for 75 bucks. Safer, less butts on the bed, cozier, no people next door... and right now, less covid chance. Heck I'd pay more to stay at airbnb than a hotel. Any time, even before this year. There are probably good deals on airbnb now. An alternative idea.

so here's my thought. I have never done Airbnb and my wife is dying to. She thinks its a great deal. Me, I imagine I'm going to show up and the house/rental not even be at the address they stated or I arrive and like a real estate ad the photos are from 15 years ago when the place was first bought. I feel more security in a physical brick and mortar hotel apparently. I also overly YELP everything for the most recent photos and reviews. I also dont go stay at the local Howard Johnsons either so maybe thats why I feel more secure.
