Default Places Near SCAD

I am moving to Savannah in June to go to SCAD. I really want a place within biking distance to the facility I'll be most at which is just south of Forsyth Park. I don't have the money to go down and look at places before I move so I have no idea what the neighborhoods are like. I would like not to have to bike through any bad neighborhoods. Any suggestions for areas? I've been seeing a lot of places for rent about 40th-50th street area. Are there any zipcodes that are better?

Thanks!

I am going to do a lot of guessing here. I think that you will be at a building on Bull Street in about the 34-35th street area. If so, then the 40-50th street areas would only be 5-15 street further south.

The houses are numbered starting at #1 at Bull Street and going upward both east and west. Changing at the start of each block, 200, 300, 400, etc. (the 200 E. would be the same distance from Bull as the 200 W. address)

Now. Some of that area is in a transitory state. Therefore it could be good or not depending on the address. If you will be going to the building on Bull, you would simply head over to Bull and go north. The neighborhoods would be just fine along Bull Street.

That's about all I information I can give you based on a guess.

I'm hoping the neighborhood along Bull St. will improve once they open Arnold Hall (the old Richard Arnold School). Right now, it's a dark and desolate area at night. Bull St. running south towards the 40-50th streets has a couple of dangerous gauntlets where patrons from night clubs are prone to spill onto the street. There also appears to be gang activity in the area west of Bull from the 30th streets south. That means lots of guys hanging out near Bull St. corners. Not a comfortable environment.

I occasionally attend events in the Starland District which is near some of those clubs and have seen what I'm telling you about. There are galleries and shops there but the neighborhood is far from stable or safe, especially for beginners.

I don't think you should rent anything sight unseen. Find money to stay someplace while you look for a decent rental. Try the Youth Hostel. What's a few hundred dollars vs. a long miserable year? Get with someone at SCAD. They offer a service that pre-screens rentals in safe areas. They have a vested interest in the safety of their students and cannot afford for bad publicity to get out.

Ask for assistance.

Ellie, in the back of my mind, there once was a post where someone mentioned a list of housing that SCAD knew was available.....it may be my faulty memory, but do they have that sort of listing? I am also leery of that area where the poster is mentioning. But going by bike might be a little safer than walking if they stayed close to Bull.

And riding a bike, means riding in the street, not on the sidewalks. Some don't seem to understand the difference.

Maybe this? District | The Student Voice of SCAD They now have the SCAD classifieds.

I know what you mean about riding bikes down Bull. You have to be moving fast enough to avoid trouble. I have friends who do it on a daily basis, but it makes me nervous to recommend it to a person who's new in town.

Whitmarsh Island would not do for someone wanting to use a bicycle to get to class. Possible, yes, but not very practical. It certainly would be a long ride!
