Default Savannah Schools

Ok, now after narrowing down the house hunting we have run into another problem. What is up with the Savannah public school system. I have called the schools and cannot get a straight answer except no we have no room here. What I have learned is half of the middle schools are magnet or special schools, and the other half are not. After checking on the internet the schools in which there is room are all underperforming schools.

I have called all of the middle schools which I have read about and am interested in and cannot get an answer for admission information. Oglethorpe didnīt answer the phones for over three weeks despite calling daily when we finally talked to someone they were very rude and didnīt provide any info. Eliis is out because our daughter didnīt have previous montersorri experience. The only school which seemed to help was Costal but they also informed us they were full. DeRenne has openings but after reading about it alot of other problems too. At this point after spending alot of time house hunting I feel like I am being pushed out to the suburbs. When we contacted Richmond Hill they were very polite and sent us the info the next week and told us what we needed to do. Any pointers anyone

Students are assigned to the schools that serve the district in which they live. To enroll in another school, the parent has to apply and have a good reason. The gifted and enriched classes require the student meet certain criteria. If the student has been assigned to a school that doesn't meet certain standards, then the parent may apply to have the child transferred to another school.

The districts are changed from time to time as the student population grows in one area and shrinks in another. This time of year, it would be a little difficult to tell you exactly where you would be assigned unless you knew exactly where you would be living. Later, more towards the last of August, it would be easier to find out just what's going to be available.

My wife would love for her to attend a magnet school in which arts and science are encouraged. She would qualify for the gifted and enriched classes as she has straight Aīs except for that pesky math class where she has a B+. Do you have any suggestions or any contacts on who to call?

Most of the specialty programs are in underachieving schools
Even tho I was involved in the establishment of Oglethorpe and had 2 students graduate from there, we could not get our son in next year, there were 500 applications for 100 spots. We then chose The Honors Academy at DeRenne over Mercer Enrichment Academy Charter School.

Every parent has to be actively involved in what is being taught in all of the area schools. I recommend the what your child should know books to fill in the gaps. I would not trust the best of schools without oversight.

For High School I recommend Savannah Arts Academy ( we have 1 graduate and 1 current student)
or Honors Academy for Academic Excellence at Jenkins High School!
