Looking at the job market in the Savannah area and the prospects look kind of bleak.

My daughter is looking for healthcare jobs. My SIL is looking for assistant principle jobs, and there are just so many applicants.

Am I seeing this correctly?

No, I don’t believe you are. How wide of a search are they doing? Jobs in general are about 1.5 to 1 applicant. Hyundai has over 8,000 to be added by 2025 and another 8,000 to be added in other related markets. Gulfstream just announced another 1600. The school systems are all looking for employees, not sure about Principals. There are a lot of health care jobs throughout the area. Is it salaries or not familiar with the area?

For healthcare, start with the big employers... There are LOTS of clinical jobs currently open at St. Joseph's/Candler. Also, at Memorial Health.

Savannah has a bunch of private schools, and you may do well to Google Savannah Private Schools for contact information and have your SIL reach out directly. You may also take a peak at the Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools site's job board, since that's a centralized system. Neighboring counties also have opportunities (Bryan, Effingham, Liberty).

I guess the job boards are not correctly reflecting the jobs you are mentioning; specifically INDEED.COM. You both raise great points, going directly to the company website is probably a better way to target job openings.

An assistant principal job is hard to get anywhere. This is not a teacher, nurse, or hospital tech but upper management in a school. Without local experience and local recommendations, any candidate will have a disadvantage against hundreds of excellent, experienced local teachers who have the advanced degrees and have already applied for what are just a handful of openings. Very, very different kind of job search.

LinkedIn is supposedly the place to apply for jobs now. Indeed and CareerBuilder are more 5 years ago, and result in a lot more spam/scam "job opportunities". If the job market is looking bleak, it's not limited to just Savannah but everywhere as the economists have been predicting a recession, since last year. It's showing signs in the IT field with massive layoffs by the big tech companies including Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft.

This is quite true, there is a huge slowdown in the tech field; and AI isn't helping either. As far as job boards go, I know many HR departments cross post listings on all major boards to maximize exposure.
