Yes, Charleston is out of my price range. I have visited Jacksonville but never saw anything that struck me as historic. I dont know. I am just focusing on saving money, and feel I am lucky I am a position to choose a city, rater than having a city choose me.

Riverside Avondale Preservation
Riverside Avondale Preservation Inc. (RAP)
Jacksonville historic district
Riverside Avondale is the neighborhood you would like: riverside setting, abundant parks, and outstanding architecture, quaint shops and restaurants, tree-lined streets, enlightened urban living. I visit friends there frequently.

Yes, you should be VERY VERY concerned about getting a job because Savannah has a weak white-collar job market and low wages. I left the area because I was tired of constantly struggling. I have a Bachelor's degree but it did not help me because the jobs are just not there.
I think you should do more research on the job market and see what is available in your field and fly in for some interviews.
Good luck to you.

I would not recommend coming to sav with a job waiting. You can easily live outside of sav in a surronding town and commute like the rest of us. Pooler, Richmond Hill, Pembroke, Rincon. There are lots of choices to make it affordable.

My husband and I bought the Barnard house in June. We are fixing it up and that neighborhood is turning around. We have met many nice families and singles who live within a few blocks. If you see us out in the yard, stop and say "hi"

Wow, what a coincidence that you found this site. How did that happen?

I was doing a search on 2425 Barnard and the city forum thread came up. I couldn't believe it.

Savannah
Compared to another thread about Savannah, this thread is great-
very productive with little off-topic. Also, this thread hasn't deteriorated
into a sarcastic and cynical rant. Seems violence is an emotional subject.
So, thanks for all of the useful information.
I might be relocating to Savannah from Richmond, VA. in the near future
and I've read a lot on several forums. When I initially came to Richmond, in 1987, areas very close and in the VCU college area were rough. Coming into Richmond from 95 south, the university-suggested exit took you right into the ghetto. Couple years later I moved into Shockoe Bottom, rented a renovated loft, and walked to work on Broad Street nearly everyday, If you knew Broad St. from back then, and you're caucasian, would you have done the same?
I hope so because perceptions aren't always what they seem. In Richmond,
I was assaulted once while riding my bicycle- it was minor and I escaped.
In about 1991, I and a roommate were robbed when we were on campus. His loss was more than mine but it still stunk.
I've lived in 13 different areas of Richmond. Would I leave and then return?
Of course- one of the city's rumors (especially with those around 19-22 years of age), is that Richmond sucks (which coincidentally is approx. the same age range of many of the posters complaining on the college ratings forums...) There are nice places to live and work, and there are crappy places to live and work. Do I hate it here? Not at all. Richmond is a nice place to live.
Being in the interiors & architecture professions, if you're considering buying an historic home for renovation, expect a thorough job to really do it right. As far as what's worth what, make a list of priorities, assign costs,
and consider values. Value can be fairly subjective... Also, go there and explore the area.
Thanks again, Paul

Wow, this thread has a long long life! To update; I have been to Savannah several times, nothing ever happened to me or my car. Hoping to make the big move to Savannah in a few months! That's the game plan.
