Hiya, don't quite get the whole 'won't swim in them waters'....perhaps cause I'm not local. Is it literal like they kill people (because I've heard that the tides are fierce out there....) or is it like, I won't go to that area period....???

Seems to be that way overall in life...some get ya and some don't!

My opinion is Savannah is good for some, bad for some...depends on your situation.

Yea I guess that's a point. Depends upon what you're looking for and put into it.
I will have to wait and see once I get there...and pray and work hard it all works out in the end-
Thanks Mike!
I love smiley faces!!!

You belong downtown. Find a quirky SCAD roomate that you can share a condo with. The sense of humor and endless energy will be an asset to the downtown vibe. If it's feasible, stay downtown at an Inn or maybe the Thunderbird if you're on a budget and ask every young local you see about what they think is a good side of town. They know downtown better than anyone.
Good Luck,
Michael

I am a San Franciscan-reared,educated and raised there -albeit, generations ago (1960s-80s). I have lived in Georgia for over 15 years-mostly Metro Atlanta but last few months just outside Savannah. I have spent most of my time roaming the north Georgia mountains. With few exceptions,I find people everywhere respond better when treated fairly and given due respect. In my experience, Southern people tend to be real and sociable. Although I dont have the southern draw of my southern friends, I feel more common values/experiences with them than differences. So, I think anyone could feel comfortable if they arrive with the right mindset.
Oh, I like the southside of Savannah/Richmond Hill area, but I don't know in-side the city that well.

Down to earth people to share a low-country boil with? Affordable areas-Baldwin Park, Parkside, Thunderbolt. Tybee Bch has a great local culture (lots of artistic/unpretentious types) & Downtown is WONDERFUL, but both can be really expensive.
I moved here almost 7 years ago from Palm Bch County, Florida- I can relate to the "gated community" mentality! I live out on the Islands and LOVE IT! Very safe, great people, lots to do .
GOOD LUCK in your search!

Downtown has its benifits and drawbacks. I lived there for the past two years, but recently moved to ardsley park. The best thing about living downtown is that you can walk everywhere and never need to drive. Downtown is a great for walking. If you do drive anywhere downtown everything is on parking meters and it can be difficult to find parking. The city just finished building the underground parking garage at elis square, and hopefully it will improve the situation. Also if you live downtown the street sweepers come by your house on certain days and if you leave your car in a sweep zone you will get a ticket (parking tickets can add up quick downtown). If you enjoy live music and nightlife there is always something to do. There are other areas within 5 to 10 minutes of downtown that are more laid back. Whitmarsh Island, Wilmington Island, Midtown (Ardsley Park) all are good choices.

Thanks folks!
Hi to all that responded with info. Thank you. I can see myself living in Savannah even with or without info...funny how sometimes places just draw you regardless of what you find out. I spent only a day there but loved the vibe and how people seemed to be, polite but warm. Hard to find nowadays. I am traveling through the northwest now because of that and it turns out that some of what I thought I'd love I don't and found cute little places along the way I never would have had I just stayed to my itinerary.
So thank you for all that answered. I think I have what I need...because nothing beats actual experience and I will only know once I go.
Ciao!

I left Savannah because of the limited white-collar job market and low wages. I was tired of struggling and decided to move on.
Real estate prices will probably seem cheap compared to California prices but you have to look at what the jobs pay in your field and crunch the numbers to see if you can afford to take a pay cut and maintain your current standard of living.
Good luck to you.

And I'm sorry. I can't help resist matching attitude with attitude. Ask nicely and we'll go out of our way to help you in a civil manner. Otherwise, make do with what you get.
Considering I am a native and have lived here a long time, I'm probably one of about five regular posters who can tell you what you're asking for. The rest of them are probably just laughing at the two of us go at it.
