Savannah is....well, Savannah. In my well-travelled opinion, there is no other place quite like it. When I was in high school in an outskirt of Savannah, I couldn't wait to get away. When I had kids of my own, I couldn't wait to get back. I will say that when I left in 1997, crime seemed WAY worse in most areas than it seems now - of course, everything from my childhood seemed larger so again that could just be perception. Savannah has it's own quirks but that is part of it's charm.
Downtown is still undergoing a "rejuvenation" thanks to consolidated efforts between City Council and Savanah Metro Police as well contributions, both political and financial from SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design). As with any city, there are good parts and bad, and sometimes both go hand-in-hand. As you mentioned, Savannah IS a tourist city but that is by no means a bad thing, nor does it mean that there are not plenty of job opportunities outside of the tourist industry, many people are brought to this area for employment in the shipping and aviation industries that are holding steady despite today's economy, or they are transferred here by the Army.
You mentioned renting rooms - I advise plenty of caution in this regard. I guess I am a big Ninny when it comes to sharing my common spaces with strangers. Good luck to you, I hope you enjoy this area!

Hi everyone I am new to this forum and have been reading alot of your posts I would like to know where is a good place to relocate I have a 15 year old daughter who grew up in a somewhat rural area of pennsylvania. I am originally from New York and do not want to live in a big city anymore I am looking for low crime area, pretty decent schools, not a major city, more of a laid back diverse area that is not too expensive. I thought I wanted to move to stone mountain or savannah but now I don't know listening to these posts. Can some one give me some suggestions. I will say that I want to move out of where I am its not very diverse or hospitable [well if you are considered an outsider]. I moved here with my husband,we have since separated. Thanks mizzqt57

Make this quick...
Did thirty years in N.Y.
Did twenty years in San Diego.
Did eleven and a half painful years at Lake of the Ozarks, in Missouri.
And this is where I decided to take "The Last Ride".
Take it for what it's worth.

I don't consider myself a racist, but a realist. There is a lot of racial tension in Savannah in my opinion. Example: Blacks complain that the police don't serve their neighborhoods as they do white neighborhoods. However, when the police try to track a criminal to his lair, if it's in a black neighborhood, no one wants the police there for that reason. They then feel the cops are there to cause mayhem and to attempt to unfairly incarcerate a black man. As if black men never commit crimes and never deserve to be locked up. It doesn't seem to matter if the black man attacked one of his own, either. They stick together just to avoid seeing him get hauled off. THAT seems racist, to me.

I agree, not only is the crime rate a terrible problem, but the educational system is AWFUL! Everytime I went to school I was scared that I would get stabbed or something. All schools are majority black, and even in the magnet program you are still around kids who just don't want to learn. If Savannah didn't have its historic district then it would just be a criminal's haven.

Savannah No!
Thanks for the replies. It appears that Savannah is not the place for use to move to. I don't want my daughter to be in a school where she if afraid to go I really would like to relocate to either Georgia, florida, or the Carolinas. does anyone have anymore feedback thanks

And it seems to me like you're trying to poison every thread.

And yet you both still live in this awful place?
There are plenty of other cities to choose from.

Don't let these crazies scare you away. There are plenty of good neighborhoods and good schools around Savannah. In fact some of the top 10 schools in the state are within 20 minutes of downtown.
Do you own research, come and visit. Don't make your decisions off of some person that plays on the internet all the time.

<But I got tired of saying it.>
Seems like someone is on a mission to badmouth Savannah as much as they can?
