I moved to Savannah in 1989 from LA (CA not Lower Alabama). At first, it was HUGE culture shock! I met lots of people and worked all kinds of wacky jobs. Then, a few years later, I moved to McIntosh County, about 40 minutes south of Savannah. I loved it. I was close enough to Savannah to enjoy the beauty of the city, yet far enough away not to have to lock my doors. The only crime I suffered the whole time living in the South was someone stealing my Sunday beer.
Savannah is lovely, but the Coastal areas are less stressful, less crime, less money but just as beautiful, albeit in a different way.
We moved last year to St George, Utah to raise 3 teenage girls. We felt it a better alternative for them than Georgia. We now feel remiss in our choice for many reasons. We plan on moving back as soon as possible. what I am trying to say is that, sure, Savannah (and surrounding areas) isn't perfect, the schools are less than good, the racial issue is real and a way of life, crime at any level sucks and so on. But if you have a open mind, and a good sense of humor you will draw life long lessons from living there. Take a pro-active stance in the community and watch yourself become part of the solution whatever crusade you attempt.
