Hi all,

I am sue, a highly qualified teacher in England thinking about the possibility of teaching in Savannah or the surounding areas.
Does anyone know if this has been done by a UK citizen?
They would have to be on the H1 visa not just a teaching programme J visa.
Also, I have had a quick look on various sites but dont really know the areas around here.
Could you possibly suggest a few 'good' areas for me to start my search.
There would be my husband (who cant work on my visa) and I, and 2x21yr old sons who would have to go to college.
Looking forward to your replies,
Sue

If I were you, I would first contact the Savannah-Chatham Board of Education. They would be far more able to give you the possibilities of an opening in your particular field. As a rule, there aren't enough teachers to go around. Sooooo, you probably would be welcomed with open arms. I really don't know how your Visa status would affect your hiring. There may be some restrictions. There again, your best bet would be the Board of Education.

There are four colleges in the Savannah area. Armstrong Atlantic State University, Savannah State University, South University and the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). There is also the nearby Georgia Southern University at Statesboro. Your sons would have no problem in finding a place. Georgia Southern is the biggest with the most varied programs.

Thanks for your reply. I have contacted the board and am awaiting their reply.
Just wondered if anyone actually knew of anyone?
Looks like a good area for colleges, now all I need is the job

The biggest question is what specialty? Special ed, Math, or Science for the middle schools these are the biggest areas of needs. You will not get a h1b visa these are used mostly for high tech jobs, engineering and large corporations fight over them. My wife has several friends from Spain here in the United States who are on teaching visas. It can be done so don't get discouraged.

Hi,

I have taught all ages from 3 - 11 years but really specialise in the Kindergarten age range.
The only teaching visas you can have are the H1b which can lead to permanent residency or the J visa which doesn't, so it would have to be the H for me. The J is much easier and are what most people are on, such as vip programs, but these are no good for me.
You can get the H1b, as if you are teaching you can be classed as affiliated to one of the colleges, and they are exempt from the yearly quota. I had one in Florida last year but unfortunately had to go home.
I will keep trying,
Sue

OH God, do not teach in savannah public schools. You will get beat up by students, and have to worry about getting shot everyday.
