Memorial is a teaching hospital and is also connected with the Mercer Medical School. St. Joseph/Candler is supposed to be developing a program with the Medical College of Georgia, but I don't know if it's in operation yet.

There are several group practices for Gastroenterology. One of them, The Center For Digestive & Liver Health is located on the campus of Memorial. I use one of their doctors and have found that the staff and facility are excellent. I am sure that others are just as good, but I don't have any personal knowledge of them.

I too am looking for a GI doc in the area; let me share an experience with you. Last week I went to an appt with a Dr at the Georgia Center for Digestive Diseases in Savannah. The doctor spent about 2 minutes talking with me but didnt even exam me. Afterwards, I met the office billing person who told me to return for the routine colonoscopy at an out of pocket cost of $500 for the doctor's fee and $600 for the office facility fee. After talking to her I stopped at the checkout counter to pay my $30 office visit fee and noticed the written bill for that day said I might be responsible for an add $125. I thought this all sounded a bit much so I called my insurance co who clarified that I wouldnt be responsible for these fees. Needless to say, I will be using a referred doctor from the insurer.

Ok..that is not a good sign. One thing that is concerning me about our relocation is finding good, reputable doctors. It was recommended to me the other day(by my doctor) to inquire at a teaching hospital's GI department. I wish you good luck..If you find a good doctor, please send me a pm...thanks!

My doctor recently retired but this is a well run office of doctors and they do procedures in-house.

I always go with whatever specialists my family doctor recommends. She knows who is good and who I will be sympatico with. If you have a GP, tell him or her your requirements and have them refer you.
