My family and I have visited St Simon the last 2 years, and fell in love with this area. We are seriously thinking about moving away from the Cincinnati area to ga--warmer!!!! My son is graduating in 3 years and looking at some colleges in the south. So, it would be my husband, myself, and my daughter, who is 6 now. What we would like is somewhere safe, good schools, and not too far from the beach. I am a pediatric nurse--so a close hospital would be good also. I have looked a little at St Mary's, Brunswick, and St. Simons. Is Jacksonville close enough to commute? Am I looking in the right places--can anyone recommend any of these places or somewhere else?

I don't know anything about the islands but I love Jacksonville. I have 3 sisters who live there and they all love it. We grew up in several states on the east coast and then Chicago. All of them say once you move to the south you never want to go back north and you wonder why you didn't do it sooner. We moved to Savannah 2 years ago from Chicago and we agree about the weather. We now live in Alabama and when my husband was looking for a new job we weren't going north!

Jacksonville has a lot to offer. There are a lot of nice areas but it is pretty expensive.

A commute from St Simons, Brunswick and even St Marys to Jacksonville would be difficult IMO.
If you need proximity to Jacksonville and are looking for the St Simons 'vibe', I would suggest you check out Atlantic Beach (about 10 mi from Jacksonville).

St Marys to Jax is a common Commute
Brunswick to Jax is a long hour without backups

Brunswick/St Simons does have a regional hospital (Southeast Georgia Regional Medical Center www.sghs.org ). IMO it is a great place to live; St Simons Island, however, is pricey. There is very little housing stock there for under $400M, even condos. If that would strain your budget, Brunswick offers more low-priced alternatives.

Thanks for the replies!! We do love the St. Simons vibe, but that is the only place we have been in that area. Our budget will be under 300, so I know that is going to be difficult. I haven't been able to find out too much about the hospital in Brunswick. I would prefer to continue working with pediatrics, but would consider something else. Jacksonville has a pediatric hospital which is why I was looking around there too. The houses in Brusnwick seem very reasonable. Is it a safe area?

My brother in law works for Nemours as does my sister. He is in computers and she is administration. They both love the company and they have amazing benefits.

Most of Brunswick is safe...there are some sketchy areas, to be sure; the North End (easily identified by its' 'alphabet' streets, just north of downtown) and the Albany St area just east of downtown. If you like older neighborhoods, the Union St area, or South End has some great Victorian architecture, and Windsor Park (between downtown and the marshes) is a lovely 20's - era neighborhood. There are plenty of lovely newer developments to the north and west of town, and plenty of options within your budget. In the downtown Brunswick area, gentrification is well under way.
Also, Brunswick has one of the strongest economies of any small city in GA, largely due to it's growing status as a seaport and the growth of FLETC (Federal Law Enforcement Training Center) after 9/11.
