Bloomingdale to retire?
My wife and I fell in love with the Savannah area a couple years ago, and we're giving strong consideration to retirement there (retirement's still about 3 years away). On our last visit we cruised some outlying towns, and Bloomingdale looked quiet and a reasonable distance from the City of Savannah, yet not much more than an hour from Tybee. What can you tell us about living in Bloomingdale/Pooler? Crime? Taxes? Quality of life? I can't find out much about taxes on-line. Thanks in advance. By the way, one of the things we like most about Savannah and vicinity are all the really nice people we've met there.

We always suggest that people come and rent for at least six months before they buy. Yes, Bloomingdale is a nice little small town. But it could be Anytown, USA. If you like Savannah, and all it has to offer, you might not care for Bloomingdale.
A lot will depend on where you are coming from and what you are used to.

If you're willing to live that far from Savannah, I would recommend you try Bulloch County. You could live in either Stilson or Brooklet and the housing/taxes would be cheaper. You get the small town feel with the convenience of Savannah or Statesboro for health care, shopping, college classes (even for retirees) or just a night out on the town.
I second Padgett's advice about renting. If you can swing it, I would recommend a nice place downtown or midtown (Ardsley Park would be nice) so you can enjoy the city. You may find that you don't want to be so far from the heart of the city.
Good luck and have fun.

Hey, thanks, folks. I really appreciate it. Like I said, one of the things we like the most are the friendly people.
