Oh, Ellie, I thank you very much.
I will rent a temporary house for no longer than one month so that I will spend that period to explore the area and then decide for the long term rental.
Let's hope I will manage to do it and let's hope I will avoid big mistakes.

sounds to me like you are looking for venice, CA more than Savannah (or maybe Miami Beach/South Beach).

I think the experts did a great job of outlining your impending dilemna. I would pick the HD if I were you. the Islands (I'm sorry Al) are really just suburban areas and it doesn't sound like that is for you. Tybee is pretty isolating from what I can tell thus far (though I like to go often).

If you want to live "mostly" carless, you need to live in the HD, IMHO, and near Kroeger's (the only real supermarket in the HD; yes, i know it isn't officially in the HD).

You might miss the beach, but I think you and your dog will get everything else. I'm so curious what is bringing you to leave Italy and come to the Hostess City along the Costal Empire of the Low Country (ha!).

Hey there! I'm an Army brat but I've lived in Savannah the longest and I LOVE IT HERE. And I can say that we've had a cold snap this week and it's nowhere near the -40 degrees my sister has been telling me about - she lives in Madison, WI. A few things to consider when moving to Savannah - how well do you handle traffic (Wilmington Island has one way in - one way out so there can be some traffic delays), how long are you planning to stay (if longer than four years, you'll need to consider school systems for your two year old) and whether to rent or buy. I always use the four year rule - less than four years, rent. More than four years - buy. Now is a great time to buy in this area - plenty of selections, low prices and a phenomenal interest rate. Areas west of I-95 still have 100% financing. I can send you a list of "free entertainment" as well - something my family and I have gotten really good at this past year .

Good luck to you!
