As for the drive from South Charlotte to Savannah, its about 3 and a half hours... not nearly as far as was stated earlier. I've made that drive several times and even with traffic it never took me 5 1.2 hours.
Vendors, this year, I've heard will not be making a return. Not 100% if thats true, but thats what I've been told. (working at a hotel in downtown Sav'h, you hear things like that)

For St. Patrick's day I'm usually up on one of the balconies at the First City Club on Bull and Congress St.
It is a very nice time.

I think locals in-the-know probably have as much or more fun than our guests do. Sounds like you've got it figured out.

I think city council is still deciding on this, but there might not be any gates to River Street this year either. We'll keep visitors posted!

Correct...and no outside beer sales either.
This would be a fiasco.

That's a pretty good question. I can't find anything listed in the way of planned events for that weekend. It's hard when the holiday is in the middle of the week.
I imagine there will be a reasonable number of people in town that weekend, so you definitely won't be drinking alone.

woo hoo! i am moving to Savannah just in time! how does it work? do i have to buy a ticket, or do i just make my way to river st?
also, does "no outside beer sales" mean everyone has to jam-pack themselves into the bars to buy drinks? that sounds extremely crowded!! who thought that was a good idea???
why wouldn't all of the vendors come back again this year? did something happen?

You're living in an excellent location to walk to the staging area of the parade on the morning of the parade. Get up early and walk to Lincoln St. Check out the floats before the parade. Sometimes they load up the Budweiser horses right there at the Kroger.
The parade begins at Abercorn and Gwinnett around 10 am. Put on some comfortable shoes, wear lots of green, wander the parade route during the parade, and drink slowly.
River Street is okay for a short period of time. Too many people for my taste. Try going to Pinkie Masters for a beer. More locals there.
It'll be a long morning, but you'll have a blast.
