The number of vendors has been cut down to two or three beer vendors and two or three food vendors. Local restaurants, starting with River Street businesses, get priority on the limited space.

St Pat's: Open until 3 a.m. with outside beer sales | SavannahNow.com

With 33 days to go until St. Patrick's Day, the Savannah City Council on Thursday approved changes to the festival, ending a month's worth of heated debate.

After discussion in a morning workshop, the council without dissent agreed to:

-- Extend alcohol sales from 1 a.m. to 3 a.m., the normal closing time for bars.

-- End gating at River Street entrances but continue sales of $5 wristbands, which allow people to have cups of alcohol outside. Wristbands will be available at kiosks at each River Street entrance and in bars.

-- Form a study committee with a cross-section of membership that represents a variety of interested parties and citizens. Council asked that a report from the committee be presented by October.

I'm trying to set up a trip for me and my friends to Savannah for St. Patrick's... i went last year but only for one night, so my questions are:
1.) will everyone be partying every night of the weekend leading up to St. Patrick's (on tues) or is it just on St. Pat's Day that the best stuff happens? Like, if I go the Saturday before, will they let you drink outside on River St or is that just on St. Pat's?(I can't really remember that many details, I tagged along with my sister last year, I'd never heard of Sav's festival before!)
2.) Are any of you SURE that the bus runs til late (like midnight, 1am) back to the mall, and like a previous poster said, is it $10 per person? Cause when I went last year, we stayed in Richmond Hill, and it was $25 per person ($75 total) one way for a taxi.
I'm just worried to get there and not be totally prepared!

I can't find new info on the bus schedule for the mall shuttle. You'll have to contact Chatham Area Transit Chatham Area Transit and ask them yourself.

You can always drink outside on River Street, in fact you can carry an open, plastic container anywhere in the Historic District north of Jones St.

There will probably be a lot of people partying on the weekend before the parade, but expect it to be a little quieter than usual due to the fact that the parade is on Tuesday. I'm sure Monday will be a madhouse.

As the holiday gets closer, the paper will most likely publish a section on the ins and outs of getting to the parade. SavannahNow.com | Savannah Morning News

Ok I have a different kind of question. I had forgotten all about St Pats day and was planning a day trip for that Mon (16th) for me, a friend staying in Myrtle Beach and another staying near the AL line. We figured it was close to half way for both of them. Is it crazy in Savannah the day before St Pats day? I was hoping to show them around town since once is coming from CA and the other from Canada.

In your opinion, would it be better to arrive on Monday and leave Tuesday evening, or arrive Tuesday and leave Wed evening? (being that Tues in St. Pat's Day)

For me, it's about a 3 hour drive (I live near gainesville, fl) I just want to make sure that my friends and I have as much fun as possible with as little hassle as possible

Even though I have my own questions I'm asking, I did go to Savannah last year, the weekend before St. Pat's Day (which was on a Monday) and it was pretty chaotic in the downtown/historic district (tons of people walking around, and later in the day many of them were drunk!). I can't vouch for the rest of Savannah, though.

Thanks! I was just wondering with St Pattys day being on a Tues. or in the past when it's on Wed or Thurs who the crowds are since it will be different than taking a long weekend.

We are also looking at going to Ft Pulaski & Tybee Island for the day.

Part of it depends on where you're planning to stay. You have that figured out yet?

You can do it either way. It would probably be easier on you to arrive Monday so you can get a fun night out before the parade. I imagine a lot of other people will leave late in the day on Tuesday so they can get home and go back to work on Wednesday.

But if you arrived early on Tuesday, you could see most of the parade, hang out for the drunkeness later, and leave in the relative calm of Wednesday.

Tybee and Ft. Pulaski will be busier than usual then, but it will still be nice. It's also pretty fun to wander around downtown when all of the people are here. Just be careful driving. Lots of drunk people and lots of cops out.

Don't forget you'll have to find a place to stay ahead of time.
