Tybee Island vs St Augustine (FL)
Hello all,
My wife and I looking to take a trip south for spring break here in a week or so and we are stuck between two lovely locations. Can anyone compare Tybee Island and St Augustine FL for me please? We are both in our late 20s and love to do outdoor things and LOVE the beach.
Is one place any better than the other? Why would you say this? Also, is one place more likely to be dominated by children? We would love to steer clear of them if we could.
Thanks,
SDM

They're different but similar.
Tybee is a very small quirky beach on a barrier island. Few amenities (as compared to larger beach destinations), but you do have Savannah nearby. Basic, no frills beach. I would suggest going towards the "north beach" to avoid as many kids as possible...but you will run into them.
St. Aug beaches don't have much more to them expect for proximity to St. Augustine itself & all it's touristy, outlet mall goodness. They used to allow you to drive on the beach there...but I've heard that's not allowed anymore (at least for now). No recs on the kid factor there. Maybe go to a beach removed from the hotels?
So you have two small beach areas near historic, touristy hot spots. Pick your poison.

I was just at Tybee Island last weekend and overall I was not impressed. Savannah is beautiful but if you are just going for the beach St. Augustine's beach is nicer. Not sure about surroundings for St. Aug, but Tybee island really is not that great.

I have to say that after visiting St. Augustine a couple of times, and after living in this area for almost a year - I'd by far go with St. Augustine. The beaches are ok there - but you can always go to Atlantic Beach in Jax (which isn't bad) or go down another hour or so to Daytona Beach. St. Augustine (as mentioned) does offer a LOT to do! Neat tours, great history, wonderful food and it's beautiful. One of the things we commented on when moving to the Savannah area, is how much it reminded us of St. Augustine. Both cities are very historical - and offer a lot of the same "feel". I find Savannah to be a lot less congested than St. Augustine, but similar with the forts, lighthouse, and deep rooted history. But for us, we just thought St. Augustine to be a more beautiful place, and while I love the area we're in now, I'd still recommend St. Augustine over here. I can't comment too much on the beach scene there, as we were in town mostly touring sites, but I can tell you that Tybee doesn't do a thing for us. Hubby is from Cali, and we both lived in Pensacola for a few years, so maybe we're spoiled, but Tybee has never really done much for either of us. Now Hilton Head would be worth the visit for sure. I'd recommend checking out www.tripadvisor.com and compare the 2 places. Trip Advisor offers a lot of info, and would definitely do research there before making a final decision.
If you'd like anymore detailed info - send me a PM and I'll be happy to help!
Good luck with your decision and have fun no matter where you go!

What about St. Simons Island, about halfway between St. Augustine and Tybee? It's lovely, and is a bit more sophisticated than the other two. Lots of great stuff for adults to do.

Tybee's beach is dirty. Its a shame, but I always see trash lying on it. Go north to South Carolina, their beaches are clean.

We also don't want a big crowd of folks from elsewhere on Tybee. That's why we keep it so funky. We like it that way.
