Michelle: Your are right to focus on Richmond Hill. It is the nicest community in the Savannah area and convenient to Fort Stewart. It's very historical and has many quaint shops and restaurants. My husband accepted a transfer here three years ago and we stumbled upon Richmond Hill quite by accident. I looked over the subdivisions that others have recommended, but make sure that you see Buckhead and Buckhead North. Buckhead was first to be developed, and you can find homes in any price range, some on the marsh. Buckhead North is newer and the clubhouse and pools are bigger. Lots of children to play with and both areas are friendly. They are also the closest neighborhoods to the new sports complex on Hwy. 144, which is so nice that I wish I had children young enough to play team sports. Avoid the few homes in Buckhead that back up to 144. Prices are great, but the noise from 144 not good. As of recent, there are good deals in Buckhead and Buckhead North.

gpeach - great info on the area - thank you - we too are looking at a possible move and identified the Richmond Hill greater area based on the reputation and academic performance of the High School. What do you know about Pooler? Also we are looking for a larger lot - minimum of an acre with a large newer home of about 5k square feet - my husband will be looking at Ford Plantation, Buckhead No and Belfast Keller, but if you know of any other suggestions - I'd appreciate it.
And outdoorman - are the rule enforcement issues "over the top" - my oldest is entering HS and my youngest are entering 4th grade. Enforcing rules for language, drugs, fighting - I'm all for. I was reading some where that the So. Effingham school is big on rule enforcement over dresscode issues (whether or not your shirt is tucked in, etc.) I assumed that was an abnormality. What are you experiencing and how old are your kids?

Sorry for the long time before replying but havent been back to this posting. Anyway, our first experience was when my wife brought our 2 sons to visit the middle school, a staff member stopped one of my sons in the hallway and in a rather stern voice insisted on knowing why his shirt was tucked in his pants. She didnt say anything to my wife. Having moved here before the family, I spoke with enough kids in the middle and high schools that told me of similar encounters where the school put so much emphasis on penalizing kids by ISS (or Saturday school for repeated offenses) for shirts being out or not wearing a belt. I too am all for orderliness and safety in the school but not for aggrevating students for minor issues.

Richmond Hill neighborhoods
We have lived here in RH for seven years. We bought a house in Tranquilla Hall and really love it. The neighborhood is just past Buckhead, on 144 in fact a road connects our two neighborhoods through the Hamptons. I like Buckhead, but it is a big development. I know there is some vandalism there. Tranquilla is smaller and people know each other. Lots of military officers and retirees too. Lots of kids of all ages. Swimming pool, soccer field and tennis court. Houses are in the low 300's and up. Big lots and plenty of house for the money. Both of my kids went to RH middle and high schools and we were pleased with them. Lots of school activities for the kids to do. Our house has been the hang out place and we've met a lot of nice teenagers over the past 7 years. Many are active at church, especially Savannah Christian church.
Both are now in college locally. Savannah is not so far away. The drive is worth the safety, good schools, and amount of house you get to us.
