Default Take a bath Georgia.

It is not like other smells, which can be almost imperceptable if you have lived there long enough. No, this smell is not to be ignored. The rancid garbage, human waste factory, sulphur stench reaks from Gainesville to Brunswick and every time I leave Georgia I breathe a refreshing breath of temporary relief before my compulsory return to the military base upon which I have been stationed for just over 4 years. Yes, Georgia wins the prize for worst smelling state and I have visited almost all of them. Congratulations.

However traveling south on I-95 before you get to Brunswick sometimes you can smell the Jesup mill from accross the water and it will make your eyes water.
That mill you are talking about isn't from Jesup. It's the one near Riceboro in Liberty County. They are two different ones.

Well, there is some true southern hospitality for ya....

For those "yankees" reading (honestly, we're all yankees being from America, those old southerners just don't want to admit they lost the war 140+ years ago) there are more open-minded people here who don't mind having new comers spread their roots in Savannah. So don't mind that guy, he's the minority and we'll send him back to the rock he came from. haha

Tis true. When I read the original poster's gripe and got to "military", I merely wrote it off. Besides, who is to say the poster isn't from the midwest or California, etc. No one mentioned he was from the north. Why is it always the "yankees" fault?

That's the Interstate Paper plant in Riceboro. But I think the bad smell in Brunswick is from Georgia Pacific and Hercules downtown.

Hercules long ago refined it's emission systems. All that comes out of its' smokestacks now is steam. As for the GA Pacific mill (no longer owned by GA Pacific), I don't know but I have not noticed the 'mill odor' for many years...maybe I've sublimated it.
Of course, the slightly fecund, always-present marsh odor is there (especially at low tide). But that is a pleasant odor to me because of its' familiarity.
