Moving to Savannah for the summer - apt.? dog park? transportation?
Hi,
My fianceé and I are apparently moving to Savannah for the rest of the summer. We are from Canada, and were trying to get across the U.S.A in a mini-school bus, but the school bus has broken down and we don't feel like heading home to the north quite yet! We are both writers and feel like an extended, quiet period in an unfamiliar city might not be too bad an alternative to a summer of travel.
We have two dogs, and are looking for a place that would be cheap but convenient for the dogs (a fenced yard is ideal). If anybody, for example, is looking for a house-sitter, that would be our ideal situation.
We also need advice about how to get around in the city, since our bus is out of order. Is there a good system of public transportation. Where is a good or bad place to live, if you don't have a car? We do have bikes, but are frequently with the dogs, so can't use them all that often.
How far is Savannah from an airport? I need to fly to Denver and possible Oregon at some point this summer, to visit some friends.
Any advice would be appreciated!

Are you sure you're a writer? Maybe you're a French Canadian and English is not your first language. Hmm.
You'll need to find a place close to the center of town. Maybe you can find a student to sublet a place from.
And if you can find City Data online, you can certainly google whether or not we have an airport and where it is. Goodness gracious.

1st, you cannot ride a bike to the airport, but a taxi might cost less than $20.
2nd, check on craigslist for an apartment.
There is a dog park on east broad street and also one on west 41st street.
Getting around on public transportation- I have never used it, but we do have it.

I don't have a car and I want to kill myself living out of town far from everything. Unless you live close to everything, you are practically screwed. As previously mentioned, you would need to stay somewhere central. The transit here is not so great. The buses don't run that regularly but I guess you can't expect much from a small town. On a positive note, they do have a free shuttle that takes you around to different areas in the city. The dog park downtown is small and is the only one that is public in the city. The airport is west of the city and is kinda far depending where you are coming from but it's not too bad. If you are only going there a few times then it's no worry. They have shuttles to and from the airport you pay a flat fee for.

It sounds like downtown living would be ideal for you. That way everything would be in walking distance for you. A trip to the grocery store might involve a bike, but that should be easy enough to find. The dog parks are not great. Flea infested and full of carless owners. However, if you live downtown, you can easily walk your dogs through the squares and through Forsyth park. This will also give you a chance to become acquainted with the city and all it's peculiar inhabitants.
