Smile Good areas of Savannah

What are the good areas of Savannah? What areas are best to avoid? I am planning on moving there but I am not familiar with the area. My husband is relocating us due to a job transfer. We have no children, so we don't care about quality schools or anything - just crime stats, etc. I would love to live in a home that has a history (we are from California, where any house over 30 years old is considered ancient). Affordability is of course always a factor, but not over quality of life. We are looking for a nice home with shady trees and within driving distance of downtown. Any suggestions?

Umm, California is within "driving distance" of downtown.

More seriously, please read some of the many, many threads that have been posted here about exactly the same question you have. You can find crime statistics on the City of Savannah webpage.

Ardsley Park sounds like what you might be looking for, beautiful, somewhat historic, shady. And...most or all homes in Savannah cost less than similar ones in California.

It's hard to determine what you mean by "good" areas. Do you mean the multi-million dollar houses in a gated community? If so, they won't be historic.

Historic around here is in the historic area north of Victory drive. Plus Arsley Park. Then there are the water front properties like Vernon View, Beaulieu, Rio Vista, while close to Vernon View, probably would not be considered historic.

Then there's Magnolia Park, Mayfair, Fairway Oaks, Kennsington Park, Dutch Island, Wylly Island, Isle of Hope, Paxton Heights, Wymberly, Harrock Hall and about 100 dozen other great subdivisions, but they aren't historic......well maybe Isle of Hope, it was part of a 1743 Land Grant and there are a couple of houses that date back in the 1800s. But it's unlikely that you could get one of those.

Ellie is correct in suggesting that you take time to read other posts. Scads of information about the same question. You may find exactly what you are looking for.
