Default Savannah on House Hunters-is this my dream city too?

Hello,

I just saw an episode of House Hunters where a family relocated from Charlotte,NC to Savannah. It was absolutely gorgeous, the house and the surroundings. I have been considering a move to NC from San Antonio,TX.

In fact, I had been leaning towards Durham or Charlotte until I saw this episode.

I looked at all the information on City Data and have read quite a few posts. I have looked at homes on Realtor.com and although as a single mom - medical professional -, I could not afford the home I saw on House Hunters , the homes in my price range were quite nice .

I hate to go here, but, how are race relations in Savannah? I am an AA woman with a biracial child. I have been raised around military towns all my life ( dad retired AF officer) so I have been exposed to a lot of different cultures. Even in San Antonio, where Hispanics are the majority, I work in a department of 10 people with 5 different races represented among us.
I was surprised that Savannah has a 57% AA population...I always thought it was the other away around.

I am only interested in private Christian school for my daughter and wonder if anyone has any information on Savannah Christian Prep, I only saw 2 AA kids represented in all of the photos they have posted.

I want to raise my daughter in a culturally diverse, family oriented, not too large city with moderately conservative ideals.

Also, how far is Ft Stewart? As a RN, I would like to stay with civil service if at all possible. Is that commute too far?
Also, what zip codes are the best areas to live in? and which nice zip code would put me closet to the Savannah Christian School?

Thanks in advance

I can't answer all of your questions but I will say this;

If you are looking for a moderately large city with moderately conservative ideals, that would describe Savannah.
Fort Stewart is about a 30-45 minute commute from the south side of the city.

Though I imagine you will be welcome and perfectly fine here in Savannah, please don't make your decision to move here based on a television program. They are written to make a city look much more inviting and perfect than it actually is, deceptively so, in many cases.

Make your decision on practical matters.

May I suggest another option? I can understand your desire to stay with the civil service. Therefore, why not check on a position at Fort Stewart and rent for about six months in Hinesville (location of FS)

This would give you time to check out the areas in Savannah and Richmond Hill that might suit you better than Hinesville.

There are several church sponsored schools in the Savannah Area.

I happened to see that episode of House Hunters and that house was incredible--sigh.

In another episode, or maybe there were 2 different episodes, another family looked at a home in the historic district which was also incredible but it was a corner lot and lacked privacy--if that is a concern.

The brick courtyards are lovely but the homes generally don't have green play areas for children . I will add that I haven't toured the historic distric extensively and there may be some homes with larger green areas but those that I have seen didn't have the yards that might be found further out.

Hunter Army Airfield is located in Savannah but perhaps they don't need RN's?

I think of Charlotte, NC as a city that is intent on growing 'bigger', at times it has been compared to Atlanta--IIRC, it is a financial hub. Savannah has chosen to develop with less intensity or such was my impression. I would say there is a 'different vibe' for each city.

The area of west of Savannah--Pooler, specifically would offer a suburban feel, new construction and more shopping. You could take weekend trips into the historic district and get a feel for the lifestyle and see if it is something you and your child would enjoy.
