The downtown is beautifully decorated for Christmas. I'm partial to Sunday in Savannah when there is a really special village neighborhood feel downtown. Something special is going on at Wormsloe Plantation, Fort Pulaski and Fort Jackson. Take a strolling visit to the churches; mid-day church bells play hymns, and small cafes offer neighborhood-feeling stops for lite bites (think Harris Baking Co. or Wright Square Cafe and Chocolatier) or hot chocolate (think: Gallery Espresso). Art is all over the city in galleries and artisan shops -- think City Market (stop in also for an Italian Gellahtoh at Gellahtoooh! at St. Julian Street and see the new Johnny Mercer statue in Ellis Square), Gallery 440 (near Forsyth Park), and Jepson Museum (on Telfair Square, which has its own little Cafe Zeum). A highlight is Savannah Philharmonic Orchestra playing "Carols in the Cathedral" at St. John's Cathedral (on Lafayette Square), Friday, December 18, 2009. $30 admission. The SCAD box office has listing of Trustees Theatre and Lucas Theatre events (
www.scadboxoffice.com/) and public Ice Skating is at the Savannah Civic Center (SKATEFEST 2009). December 11 Jim Brickman is in town at the Civic Center (
Beautiful World Christmas) and "A Christmas Tradition" live musical plays at the Savannah Theatre through Nov 26 - Dec 20 (
"A Christmas Tradition" at the The Historic Savannah Theatre on Chippewa Square). Stay at one of the small inns -- Presidents' Quarters Inn (
www.presidentsquarters.com on Oglethorpe Square), Green Palm Inn (
www.greenpalminn.com on Green Square) or a funky retro hotel (
www.thunderbird.com proclaiming the cheapest rates downtown). Visit the little book store -- E. Shaver (Madison Square, behind the DeSoto Hilton) for a great neigbhordhood book store feel or Book Lady (in front of the Hilton on Liberty Street). The Savannah College of Art & Design has SHOPScad on Madison Square).
